Northern Counties

Under 11's

17th June saw the Under 11’s open their 2018 season, entering three teams into the Under 11’s Northern Counties tournament. Two teams from Shetland and one from Thurso made up the 6 team round robin contest. All three Orkney teams started with narrow defeats before they began to find some rhythm and started to find some results going their way. Orkney Yellows played a very good game against the Shetland Blue team, a game they should have won but ended in a draw. The White team beat Shetland Blue and Orkney Yellows and lost the other three. Orkney Reds, after losing their opener, went on to comfortably win their next three games before meeting Caithness, who were still to lose a game and only needed a draw. It was a very tough hard fought game with very little between the two sides before Orkney scored a well worked goal well taken by Thorfinn Scott and held on for a tense 1-0 win. It was the first time Orkney had won the contest for some time, but this could have been helped by the absence of ICT and Ross County!

Under 12's

On Saturday 9th June the OYDG Under 12 squad hosted a tournament at Picky. We welcomed teams from Shetland, Caithness, Dingwall Thistle and Lewis and Harris. There were a total of 10 teams and each team played each other once to determine an eventual winner. The main opinion of the day was that the play was very evenly contested and there was no runaway winner. The boys, locally and visiting, played very well and fair with respect for others. Eventual winners were Lewis and Harris.

All of the boys played very well and the football on show was of a very high standard with all matches played in a very friendly and positive manner. The coaches and OYDG would like to thank everyone who helped make this weekend possible from the players themselves, their parents, main sponsors Northlink, the Picky centre, and all the others who came along to referee, score - keep, and generally help out. We would also like to thank Shetland, Caithness, Lewis and Harris and Dingwall Thistle for coming along to make it an entertaining and enjoyable weekend of football.
