30 June

In very light conditions six Snipes turned out for the Tuesday Evening points racing in St. Mary's Bay, the last night of racing in the 2026 first points series. The course was across to 4, then 1, twice round and then to finish. The north westerly breeze died off during the race so the course was shortened to finish at mark 1. After very close drifting conditions Juno took the win with Teebro close behind in 2 place. In 3 place was Fiddlesticks. The other three boats got stuck with no wind and ran out of time so retired.

23 June

A blowy Tuesday brings a new winner

The day was mostly flat calm and warm but the forecast suggested a strong north westerly in the evening and that is exactly what greeted competitors at Holm Pier. Undeterred two Snipes came to the race area whilst two others rigged but opted out before getting wet. One of the launchers soon headed back to the slip leaving Simon and Neil in the appropriately named  Still Game to race the two ILCAs in the Handicap class with John Orr in the 7 rig ‘Lullaby’ and Kathryn Moar in the 4.7 boat ‘M’.

The course started upwind to Mark 5 with a gybe and deep broad reach eastwards to Mark 1 at the north end of the Churchill Barrier and then back upwind to the finish. This course kept the boats in relatively flat but very gusty conditions with an average windspeed of about 16 knots.

This was to be a very quick race. Lullaby struggled a bit on the upwind legs whilst Simon and Neil demonstrated just how fast a Snipe can go. Star of the evening however was junior member Kathryn Moar. She hung on to the faster boats on the upwind legs holding the boat very flat through the big gusts and despite a capsize at the first mark came roaring back to finish only 11 seconds behind Lullaby. With the time correction factor applied she won the 15 minute race by 65 seconds.

9 June

On the evening of 9 June there was a fine gusty breeze from the north west, around 16 knots with 20 knot gusts. Three races were held with the course Start, the 5 and 1 marks to port and then a finish. The first race had two laps, the next races were just a single lap each. In Race 1 there was very tight racing with only 1 second between Il Mostro and Teebro at the finish. Still Game was disqualified when he missed going through the starting gate on the upwind leg. In Race 2 Teebro took the win with Fiddlesticks and Il Mostro slugging it out on the upwind leg. In Race 3 Fiddlesticks did well to keep pace with Teebro while the other boats fell back a bit. Still Game was managing quite well but capsized at mark 1 and retired.

2 June

Damp and cool conditions on Tuesday 2 June for the Holm Sailing Club evening points races. There was a light NE breeze which backed round to the NNW gave good conditions for three races in St. Mary's Bay. The breeze was quite gusty and shifty close to the Holm shore. Five snipes took to the water along with one ILCA. Course two was selected for all three races; 1, 3, 4 ,1 and back to the start. At the front of the fleet there was very close racing, with Fiddlesticks taking the first win. Teebro and Juno took the wins from race 2 and 3 respectively.

26 May

Results from racing on Tuesday 26 May are given below. The breeze, although it was quite fresh through the day, eased considerably. For the first race it was averaging about 16 knots from the north west, dropping to about 12 knots by the end of the racing. The course was from the start a short beat to 5 then a good run down to 2 followed by a beat back up to 5 and then a reach to the finish line. The same course was used for all three races.

Teebro was first in all three races putting her in a solid first place in the series.

Il Mostro had some issues with their pole launcher but despite that managed to hold on to their position downwind.

In the second race Valkyrie was OCS and then got mixed up with a couple of other boats so was disqualified.

In the third race Still Game, in third place, had a good lead over Fiddlesticks on the final leg but lost it by one second at the finish, Fiddlesticks got a good gust and managed to use the extra speed to roll over to windward of Still Game.

5 May

A light NW breeze provided fine conditions for seven Snipe and a solitary ILCA (Laser) taking part on the first of the Tuesday evening points races run by Holm Sailing Club. Three races were held with the first running on course 12, and the next two on course 2 when the wind was lighter and had veered to the NE. The Snipe class had close racing with different winners for each race. In Race 1 Still game finished witha good lead ahead of Valkyrie, other boats finished close behind. In Race 2 Juno finished with a convicing lead over Aquamania, the next three boats were close behind with Teebro, Still Game and Il Mostro taking places 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Teebro took the win in race 3, with Juno and Tippy taking 2 and 3 places.

The ILCA (Lullaby, John Orr) started along with the Snipe fleet but managed to squeeze ahead. The Tuesday evening points racing will continue through the summer along with Wednesday evening training and fun sailing. Class racing will be held for ILCA and Snipe dinghies. The Wednesday evening training session was well attended with fourteen juniors taking part in fine weather. Toppers and ILCAs were put to good use with a chilly 12 knot breeze.

Rousay Regatta 2026

For the 2026 edition of the Rousay Regatta there was some disruption due to weather conditions. An around Wyre race was held on Sunday 5 July, for yachts.

Sam Harcus Pursuit Race 2026

The annual 90 minute Pursuit Race took place on Sunday 28th June. The forecast of Southerly winds at 10 knots was more like 6 knots from the North West so a course  from the pier to mark 1, mark 3, and mark 5 and back past the pier was set to cover all angles. The first boat away was the smaller Westray skiff Bella followed by two  ILCA 6, the larger skiff Ella, four Snipes, a sole ILCA 7 and finally some 11 minutes after the first starter the speedy Laser EPS.

When the breeze faltered some 30 minutes into the race the heavier skiffs struggled and dinghies scattered across the bay in search of wind. After another 50 minutes of drifty conditions the breeze started to fill in from behind the fleet at about 4 knots from the south east and boats converged heading for mark 5. At this point the Laser EPS had crept ahead of the pack and was able to use the new breeze to good effect drawing out a lead in the closing minutes of the race with the main fleet jostling for places right up to the time limit.  The sun shone throughout and thanks are due to Bob McKenzie, Lindsay Moar and Raymond Grieve for running the race and to Karen Muir and Sid Milton for crewing the safety boat.
