32 anglers, including 25 visitors, fished the Northern Marine Orkney Ltd sponsored championships over Thursday, Friday & Saturday 10, 11 & 12 September in weather poor enough to spoil all fishing plans. A ’catch and release’ points system was used, and anglers were drawn on different boats each day.
Three boats were involved - ‘Charles Ann’ owned and skippered by Harvey Groat; ‘Triton owned by Stevie Mowat and skippered by Roy Seatter and ‘Welcome Home’ owned by OISAA and skippered by Ronnie Tait and crewed by Arthur Cook.
 Thursday 10 September:
The day started with strong southwest winds, which made for very uncomfortable fishing with a bad backwash from previous storms. All boats braved Hoy Sound and Charles Ann ventured furthest south to Rora, with Triton and Welcome Home trying St. John’s Head. Mackerel were plentiful, and one tiny 10cm octopus coming on board. The best specimen cuckoo wrasse was also caught then. Catches were mainly ling, cod and some pollack.
Top points:  1 Paul Firth (77)     2  Mark Laurenson (63)      3 Jimmy Smith(63).
Heaviest Fish: 1 Alan Davis (Ling 5.4kg)      2 Paul Firth (Pollack 3.65kg)
Total Number of Fish – 167
Friday 11 September: Ling & Cod only
Strong south westerlies had all 3 boats fish Scapa Flow, sometimes drifting at 3.5 knots on a gentler sea. Mackerel was thick at Cava, then Charles Ann and Welcome Home ventured to Brimms and Cantick Light. Triton had drifts at Stinger Head, Nevi Skerry and The Calf.
Top points:  1 Paul Firth (61)     2 Alan Umphrey(59)     3 Jimmy Smith (53).
Heaviest Fish: 1 Mark Duncan (Cod 4.25kg)     2 Mark Laurenson (Ling 3.15kg)
Total Number of Fish – 141
 Saturday 12 September:
Continuing strong westerlies had the fleet try Scapa again, but with an eye to the worsening sea. Welcome Home and Charles Ann tried Cantick, Switha, and Flotta as Brimms was too rough, and Triton opting for wreck fishing north of Cava. Some good fishing was had, with the day’s winner having 6 trebles of pollack.

The Stromness Hotel followed this with a great carvery/buffet dinner and thanks must go to both for all their help again this year. Thanks again to Mr. Davie Guthrie for this excellent score calculator, the patient Orkney Fisherman’s Society for the use of ‘The Lobster Pond’ for the weigh-in, and The Coop for donating prizes for our Inter-county 2010 raffle.
