SCOTTISH OPEN BOAT & ORKNEY OPEN BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007

ORKNEY ISLANDS SEA ANGLING ASSOCIATION

47 anglers from all over Scotland fished the championships over Thursday, Friday & Saturday last week in weather which could only be described as perfect . Once again 'catch and release' was incorporated so a points system could be used .

Five boats were involved : 'Charles Ann' owned and skippered by Harvey Groat ; 'Girl Kilda' owned by Neil Matheson and skippered by Terry Todd; 'Jean Elaine' owned and skippered by Andy Cuthbertson; 'Crusader' owned and skippered by Kenny Peace; and 'Welcome Home' owned by OISAA and skippered by Ronnie Tait and crewed by Arthur Cook.

Thursday 27th September:The day started with a slight swell and a northerly wind veering north-east. All boats went south as far as The Old Man, with the Welcome Home venturing to Rora. Catches were mainly ling, cod and Pollack.

Top points: 1 Scott Gibson (223), 2 Mark Duncan (191), 3 Kenny Laurenson (156).

Heaviest Fish: 1 Peter Redshaw (Cod 5.85kg) 2 George Brown (Ling 4.7kg)

Best Junior: Paul Firth (136)

Total Number of Fish - 789

Friday 28th September: Winds were light north-easterly veering east later and calm seas. Cod and ling were the only species to earn points on Friday, with bigger fish receiving bonus points. 2 boats fished well off Rora, another 2 fished Rackwick and The Yellow Kist, while the last boat went north to The Brough. One good Torsk was caught weighing 3.1kg.

Top points: 1 Robert Duthie (192) 2 John Scott (154) 3 Willy Orrock (150).

Heaviest Fish: 1 Kenny Thompson (Ling 6.45kg) 2 Jimmy Smith (Ling 4.95kg)

Best Junior: Paul Firth (125)

Saturday 29th September: Near flat calm conditions encouraged all boats south past Rackwick. The Jean Elaine went to Skaill and caught dabs and red gurnard, . One spurdog, octopus and squid were caught at the Berry. Girl Kilda was surprised by a Minke whale which swam under her at The Old Man.

The boat skippers each will receive a bottle as a thank you for their great work.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bown representing Jolly's Fish & Farm Produce who sponsored 'The Big Fish Competition' presented the all prizes including excellent hampers on Saturday evening. The Stromness Hotel followed this with a great carvery/buffet dinner and thanks must go to both for all their help again this year. Thanks also to Mr. Colin Corse for this electronic scoreboard, and to Mrs. Inga Rendall for hospitality on the pier.
