Stronsay Island Wellbeing Project AUGUST 2024 UPDATE

It's been a busy month for the Wellbeing Project. We enjoyed discussing some of our projects at the massive weekend and hearing your feedback. We are working behind the scenes on the Community Food Hub Project and are hopeful to be launching this in September.

We will be setting a date next month to meet with everyone who has contacted the coordinator with an interest to join the new VIV’s (Very Important Volunteers) Project. We are excited to see this group grow!! A few of our volunteers are already actively supporting our wellbeing groups.

The ‘Stay n Play’ is running for another 5 sessions and will hopefully thereafter continue as a permanent group with the assistance of our new VIV’s group volunteer Jacqui.

Another one of our VIV’s is David, who volunteers with the Stronsay Wildlife Group and is also a volunteer Paths for All Walk Leader. Look out for these group events throughout the coming months.

The Stronsay Men’s Shed had an outing over to Stromness this month for the Scottish Mens Shed Association Orkney meeting. There are exciting plans to be made for the future of the project and new members are welcome.

If you would like information on any of the Wellbeing Projects / Groups or require one-to-one support / signposting for anything wellbeing, please email or call.

Shani - Stronsay Wellbeing Coordinator

The Island Wellbeing Project

The Island Wellbeing Project is a partnership between Voluntary Action Orkney and the Development Trusts of Hoy, Sanday, Shapinsay, Stronsay, and Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. Each Development Trust employs a Community Wellbeing Coordinator.

The aim of the project is to improve the wellbeing of island residents. It uses a very broad definition of wellbeing which encompasses health, economic, social and place wellbeing.

The project does this through the development of community-led initiatives and the provision of generalised one-to-one support. This dual role enables coordinators to respond to the immediate needs of the community, whilst developing long-term capacity.

The project has developed the I.N.C.A model to describe its approach:

Innovator: developing new projects and helping services to find new ways of working

Navigator: raising awareness of services and resources, and offering one-to-one support

Connector: bringing together people, organisations and resources

Advocate: sharing insights on community need with strategic partners

Our Coordinator can help with a range of issues. In the past, for example, we've helped people who have struggled with household bills, experienced loneliness, needed help accessing benefits, been unable to access services, had problems with housing, or who have been unable to get online

We'll work alongside you to help make sense of your situation, connect you with relevant services, and identify people and groups in the community who might be able to help.

There is no eligibility criteria and you don't need a referral.

Our Wellbeing Coordinator is:-
