For Future Generations

by Yes Orkney - 14:16 on 14 May 2014

Remember when you vote on 18 September 2014 you are not just making this decision for yourself but for all of your family and friends too.

When talking about the campaign recently I was speaking to one lady who was unsure about her vote until she spoke to her family, Her son and daughter are going to vote Yes and so too is her son-in-law because they all believe that their generation can build on and improve what has been done in the past and that a better future can be built for everyone in this country no matter what their age and circumstances are just now. As it’s their future and that of her grand-children the lady will now be voting Yes as she is convinced Scotland will be a fairer, more prosperous and more just society than the one Westminster government has produced to date.

Remember too that when you vote on 18 September you are not voting for Alex Salmond, the SNP or the next Scottish Government you are voting on the question of should Scotland become an independent country.

The first time you will vote for a fully independent Scottish Parliament will be in 2016. Between 2014 and then there could well be a political realignment in Scotland and we may all find that new parties or personalities may emerge, that the present dominant personalities and/or parties may change and that what are now smaller political parties may grow in stature.

There will be a new landscape to view and a new agenda to consider making perhaps the 2016 general election for Scotland the most interesting and engaging in years and we all have the chance to quiz aspiring MSPs about our new constitution, our new place in the world and our developing political process which will examine the issues facing our islands and scrutinise people’s willingness to engage with a political process which requires local answers to local problems/situations.

For the first time in 300 years we will make our own decisions
