Photography group walk up Ward Hill - 22nd August 2025

by Tim Wright - 18:00 on 23 August 2025

Eight of us met at the church in Orphir this morning on a dry but cool day, ideal for walking with a light Northerly wind. We set off from Scorradale hill car park and followed the ridge  across the moor to the base of Ward Hill. One of the party decided that it was too steep for her and returned to her car the way we had come. The rest made our way slowly upwards putting up a small covey of Grouse on the way. They were obviously survivors of the "Glorious Twelfth " !  While steep in 3 places the path up to the top has been enhanced by Quad Bike tracks making it easier to tackle. Eventually all seven of us made it to the top including our 84 year old stalwart.  A snack and drink to recover and take in the wonderful views from Birsay in the North, which was blessed with a little sun, to Morven in the South. Then it was all downhill and back by the tractor path that goes past Rifle Range and  the Guide Hut. Looking back as we arrived at the road , it did seem an awful long way up but by goodness it was worth it just to see the view. Arrivng at the cars at the church we had the only rain of the day which was luckily short lived.

For a variety of reasons the next walk will be on Friday 3rd of October.
