Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.
Keep moving.

Eleven hardy walkers met at the Slipway at Newark in Deerness today .The weather was forecast to be dry with a brisk northerly wind and 5C. As we set off above the beach the rain came on but although not heavy was cold .By the time we reached the far end of the beach the planned route up the road and around was changed to along the shore so as not to walk straight into the wind and rain . The shower soon passed and we made good time along the shore which was flooded as expected at the far end .This was passable with a bit of careful negotiation and a fortuitous stepping stone . Then it was up hill by road to the first left turn and back to join up with the beach road and along the shore .A good pace meant that we never got cold and the rain stayed off after the initial shower .A good 4 mile walk done in an hour and a half . Following this seven of us retreated to Celina Rupp's Cafe for warming soup and sandwiches.
As I am away for a lot of March for Golden jollifications the next walk will on Friday 7th April . More information closer to the time .
In the meantime Ellie's U3A Flat Walking Group 2 are going out on Monday 13 th March and Monday 27th March as she is away in early April. I am sure that she would be happy to include you should you need exercise while I am off south.
Keep moving, Tim.
