U3A Music Appreciation - Group 1

by Glenys - 19:41 on 09 January 2020

The first meeting of 2020 took place at Glenys’s house on Monday, 2 nd January, and she had chosen
as her theme: ‘Music for Brass’. It was unfortunate - and disappointing for all - that an unexpected
(and unusual) breakdown of CD equipment meant that, after the usual halfway break for coffee and
cake, it was only Glenys’s music (already recorded on a hard drive) that could be played thereafter.

The music played was as follows:

‘Waterman’s Hornpipe’, from ‘The Complete Brass Monkey’;
Haydn: ‘Concerto for Two Horns and Orchestra’;
The Regimental Band of Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards playing
‘Holyrood’;
Domenico Zipoli: ‘Prelude’ from ‘Suite in F major for Trumpet’;
Amadeus Mozart: ‘Allegro’ from ‘Horn Concerto No 2 in E flat’;
Leopold Mozart: ‘Agnus Dei’ from ‘Lauretanische Litanei’ for mezzo and trumpet;
Music from the Royal Scottish Academy Brass, ‘Tongue ‘n’ Groove’:
(1) Arban, ‘Variations sur Acteon’ for solo cornet (John Wallace);
(2) Jim Parker, ‘A Londoner in New York’;
(3) ‘Fats’ Waller, ‘Bond Street’.

The February meeting will take place at Kate’s house, and the theme will be advised shortly.
