Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP ONE

by Tim Wright - 19:47 on 25 May 2016

Eleven of us went to St Nicholas Church in Holm today on a rather dull but dry day with a fresh Northerly wind. Athole took us in to the main church after a brief stop in the Vestry to see the many local History items and compilations of photos there .The main Hall is empty but dry and the windows are in the process of being replaced ,shedding an interesting light on the three massive ancient grave stones mounted in the walls .The church was struck by lightening many years ago resulting in the old bell now being in the small arched window .The only other casualty was the large pot bellied boiler which was destroyed .We had a brisk walk around the grave yard which is full of Primroses at the moment .We then retired to the Fossil Centre for Tea and cakes and perusal of photos .

Gramesay had been a great day out and the sun had helped .We had lots of photos of the Lighthouses ,from a distance ,from close up and from the sea .The ruined Church was another popular photographic subject as was the red Telephone Box.We had lots of seascapes and landscapes plus some of some new born Lambs ,one with a plastic bag filled to keep him dry.A lovely selection of photos of a great day out .

"Outsized /Extra Large had been the project.Large Towers from New Zealand and Canada ,the London Eye ,very large Bulls and very large Bull's eyes all featured prominently but the Stenness Monster was the highlight although it wasn't obvious which was the Monster in the photo . Thanks to all those that took part in an very interesting  and varied interpretation .

The next meeting will be TUESDAY 21 st June at 10 am at Marwick Bay .Please note the change of date from that discussed .This is because my daughter and her Family from Australia leave on Wed 22 nd in the afternoon to return home and I need to be around that day .I hope that is not too inconvenient for everyone .If it is, we can re arrange it .The project is "Gardens/Gardening ".

Keep clicking and get down and do some night photography at the Weeping Window before it is taken down .I include one of mine for your perusal ,

Tim
