Stanger wins Gold Cup marking league 50th anniversary

Prizewinners on the day of the KDDL 50th Anniversary Golden Singles. Back row from left, Derek Firth, Derek Ward, Linda Seatter, Stuart Thomson, Erlend Lennie. Front row, from left, Wilfie Tulloch, league secretary Jim Scollie, winner Robbie Stanger, runner-up Ian Linklater, league honorary president Jimmy Miller, league president Craig Taylor, and Colin Kirkpatrick.

Would you believe it, 50 years ago four young men met in a Kirkwall Bakehouse and decided to form a Kirkwall Darts League, later changed to Kirkwall District Darts League when St Ola parish wanted to enter.
Now 50 years on the league held the 50 Years Anniversary Golden Singles, and you guessed it, 50 players entered, 40 gents and 10 young ladies. Only one of the ladies won a game, so Linda Seatter won the best lady prize. Quite a few of the top players were absent but it wasn’t noticed as the players turned on the style.
The 301 double start , like it used to be, caught some of them out but by the time they changed back to the 501 game, it was a very good line up.
None of the three old boys who had entered made it and out of the 16 left six were ‘B’ players but only Derek Ward Snr made the money round and that was his lot and in the semi-finals Wilfie Tulloch lined up against Ian Linklater with Robbie Stanger taking on Paddy Kirkpatrick.
Scores were 4-1 for both Ian and Robbie. In the final the score of 5-1 to Robbie looked very one sided but it was Robbie’s great finishing that carried the day and a great 156 finish did finish it, but I think darts all round won the day and it turned out to be a very remarkable fun day for the players. A big thank you to the Legion Club for joining in the fun with a lovely poster. Here's to the next 50!

What’s going on in the Williamsons Darts Leagues, as the Legion dropped points once again as third bottom Wanderers held them to a six all draw.
They still lead the Williamsons ‘A’ League, but the Commodores closed the gap to four points after an 8-4 defeat of the Sands 2 but the Golf Club lost ground going down 7-5 to the Untouchables.
The Sanday v Legion Arrows game was postponed so the Arrows played a postponed game and went down 7-5 To Quoyburray ‘B’. The Untouchables ‘A’ v Quoyburray ‘B’ game there was no score card.
It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in the Williamsons ‘B’ League as there are so many teams who could still win it.
Top contenders are Tankerness, Quoyburray and Shapinsay. Tankerness had a very good and important win over the Vikings 7-5 and keeps them level in the top spot with Quoyburray who beat Murray Arms 9-3, but the Hope boys are only two points of the top. The Nomads had a good 9-3 win over St Ola. No score from the other St Ola team.
The Bilco Boys after an  8-4 defeat of the Motorhoose are only seven points of the top two.
180’s from Ryan Tulloch, Gordon Rendall, Ian Wilkie, Ian Linklater, Erlend Lennie, Derek Ward Jnr, Colin Ross, Brett Dickinson and Gary Wilson, two from Robbie Stanger and four from Kevin Gray.
High checkouts of 101, 114 & 156 from Robbie Stanger, 108 Gary Norquoy, 109, 120 & 131 Ian Linklater, 108 Gordon Rendall, 111 & 114 James Flett, 111 & 115 Stuart Thomson, 112 Billy Ward, 114 Neil Drever, 116 Brian Murray, 117 John Thomson, 118 Ryan Tulloch and 161 Andrew Moar. Ian Linklater scored a 177 and a 12 darter from Kevin Gray and Derek Firth.

It’s the young players turn this Saturday with the under 30's open singles being held in the Masonic, names in by 1.30pm.
As the titles states for any player male or female who is under 30 years of age. Then the following Friday it is back to ranking points for the ‘B’ players with the ‘B’ singles in the Legion.
There will be a committee meeting on Wednesday, February 22 in the Masonic at 8pm.
