Brand new ranking points event on Friday

A great turnout of 11 teams entered for the first domestic cup of the New Year, the Swanney Cup. That’ s half the registered teams. The only B teams to make it past the first round were the Murray Arms and Shore 2, but both fell at the quarter-final stage. Both Wanderers teams made it to the semi-final stage and it looked as if they could both make the final, but the Legion put paid to the Wanderers, while the B team made the final with a great win over the Golf Club. And what a great final it was, with the Legion just making it by winning the play-off leg. All the games were very close, with seven of the ten games going to the play-off stage.

It is the first of the new year¹s ranking points singles on Friday, with a brand new trophy the E. R. & T. Craigie Singles being played in the Quoyburray Inn, at 7.30pm. It is for registered players only. Then, on Monday, it¹s the last of the team domestic cups, the Henderson Cup for A and B teams. It is in the Royal British Legion, with names in by 7.30pm.

The Kirkwall Open, which carries prize money of over £1000 is taking place on Saturday, March 12, in the Masonic Club. The KDDL will be holding a bottle stall on the day and it is hoped that all the registered teams will contribute at least one bottle. They can be left with any committee man, or with the secretary Jim Scollie at 1 Sommerville Square, Kirkwall.

There were 180s from Craig Taylor, Martin Peace, Roy Griffiths and Bruce Moar. Robert Gatt had a 100 finish and Gordon Rendall a 113.
