Fanooks are cup winners

WITH three of the top teams postponing their games in the Williamson’s ‘A’ League, it allowed the other teams to make up some ground.

However, there’s no change at the top with the Legion leading the Untouchables by three points, having played a game more and I believe they play each other this week.

The Untouchables ‘A’ moved three points nearer after beating Meadowbank 8-4 and the Wanderers also gained the points with a 9-3 win over Quoyburray. There was better luck for Quoyburray ‘B’ as they defeated Wanderers ‘B’ 10-2.

The Commodore and Golf Club also postponed their game – illness was the reason given.
It’s getting very tight in the Williamson’s ‘B’ League with both the top two losing – the Fanooks for the first time, out in Tankerness to the home team by 7-5. It puts Tankerness up a couple of places in the league.

Sanday moved up level at the top with the Fanooks by beating the Murray Arms 7-5 out in the ’Hope. But the top six teams are only separated by four points.

Deerness got their second win of the season by beating the Shore 2 7-5 – the same score as the Shore over the Likely Lads. In fact, 7-5 seemed to be the popular score for the week as the Bilco Boys beat Sands 2 by that score.Last week’s game saw the two Shore teams share the points after drawing 6-6.

There have been 18os from Raymond Foubister, Brian Stevenson, David Kirkpatrick, Glen Miller, Jimmo Gunn, and Mike Bain.

High finishes include a 100 from Eddie Craigie, while Mike Bain got 106, Willie Laird 114, Stevie Harris 118, and Hendry Bateman a 120.

Four teams entered for the St Ola Cup. It’s the third domestic cup in which only four have entered. It is a ‘B’ league cup and the Fanooks proved too strong for Sanday in the final, winning 3-1.

Tomorrow, Friday, the ‘A’ League players will play for the Allied Hotels Cup in the Legion Club. It’s for teams of three players so teams could enter two team’s names by 7.30 p.m.

There will be no ‘A’ League games next week to allow the team travelling to Shetland to have a get together and practice. It gets underway at 7.30 p.m. in the Legion Club.
