Founded in 1968, Orkney Heritage Society is a charitable body whose objectives are:
  • To stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of Orkney.
  • To encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public amenity or historic interest.
  • To encourage high standards of architecture and planning in Orkney. 
In furtherance of these objectives the Society organises public lectures, conferences and trips. The Society produces various publications and organises a series of awards. It also provides support to projects consistent with its purposes, participates in various amenity groups and is consulted on planning matters.
 
Following on from our initiative in 2010 The Year o Orkney Dialect, we have commissioned research into dialect entitled 'Migration and the Mither Tongue'. Dialect Scholar Tom Rendall has interviewed a range of people on their attitudes to dialect and is presenting a series of talks over the coming month. This has been made possible by support from Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership and Scotland's Islands.
