The Stromness/Kirkwall bus route stops at the Stenness Shop/Garage and the road opposite takes you to the Community Centre, (5 minutes walk away).

The hall has good light and easy access, the cost for the 3 hours is £3.00 per session. We would like to encourage more folk to join it will be a time every week to put into practice perhaps some of your ideas on what you would like to achieve.  I will be able to encourage  you on most of the mediums, by that I mean,  oil is one of my favourite but in some situations, impractical  to use.  Advice is always at hand though ,one shouldn’t forgoe the experience of using oil.   It would be very nice to hear from you do give me a ring or email.  Later in the year we plan to sketch and paint outside and more structured classes in the coming year.

Meets: Monthly, more in summer, usually on Wednesdays.  See calendar for dates.

The Botanical/plant group meets regularly throughout the year to look at the plants, geology and wildlife of Orkney. Short walks, plenty of opportunities for photography and bird-watching. Tea-rooms and exhibitions, beach-combing, geology and gardens...there is a broad relaxed remit. The outer isles are visited and  we car share whenever possible. Suitable for the complete beginner to the more expert.  The group contributes species lists to the local plant database via the county recorder for plants. We take it in turns to co-ordinate the trips. Check the calendar calendar.asp?pageid=1329 or Blog blog.asp?pageid=1331 for current  trip details.

  Moira Gunn    Tel: 761191

  Email c/o : OrkneyU3A@live.co.uk
We are a friendly social group of like-minded crafters who want to learn and experiment with new crafts while sharing our skills and ideas. In the past we have tried encoustic art, Temari, needle felting (creating beautiful pansy brooches, pictures and handbags), Swiss straw work, Somerset and cathedral patchwork and various paper crafts. Currently we are refreshing and practising our embroidery stitches. If any of these appeal or you can instruct us in something new, please get in touch - details above. All the action takes place in Finstown on Thursday mornings -  weekly  10.00 - 12.

At present there are 8 people on the list and between 2 and 7 folk attend at meetings which are not specially regular but normally at least once a month and can be more frequent as is convenient for people.  Always on Thursday mornings so far.

At the last meeting we listened to composers for the letter G, including Grieg, Orlando Gibbons, Gluck, Guerrero, Niel Gow and (a stray one from last time), Manuel de Falla.  It isn't at all academic; we just enjoy listening to recordings brought by each other and sometimes what comes in overlaps, often it doesn't.  It's interesting to hear whatever appears.

 PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

  Contact: Tim Wright

  Email:

  timandphylida533@btinternet.com

We meet every 4th Wednesday at 2 pm at a previously agreed venue.  For about 1 - 2 hours we take photographs of anything that appeals to our eye.  From there we usually adjourn to a nearby tearoom to look at and discuss our best pictures taken at the previous venue and some of a theme set by the group each month (our homework as it were) oh and tea and stickies of course!  There is no pressure and no competitions, just good fun and company, the aim being to update and improve our photography skills.
