Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

U3A Walking Group - November 2018

by Tim Wright - 17:21 on 23 November 2018

Twelve of us met at the Point of Ness Caravan site to walk to Warbeth and thence onto the Gun viewpoint in Stromness. Luckily the forecast drizzle never materialized and the wind was light. The walking was easy and at Warbeth, while stopping to catch breath, we spied over 40 Ring Plovers on the beach also resting except they were able to rest on one leg. We did not follow their example !

Back past Warbeth, Jack peeled off to look for his Grandfather's grave but was unable to locate it. It has an interesting inscription from the Lighthouse Keepers as he was Captain of the relief boat. Next time Jack will be sent ahead to suss it out for us.

On then to The Gun Lookout where the views were excellent but also showed a heavy shower over Wideford direction, the original walk destination. Back through Stromness to the cars  still dry and, by then, hungry too. Off to lunch out for some but all food well earned after an good morning's exercise.

The next walk will be on Thursday morning the 6th December. The venue is not yet decided but I will let you know nearer the day. We will then start walking early in the month in the future  so that the U3A outdoor groups will not clash towards the end of the month.

Keep moving, Tim.
