Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

The Orkney U3A music group had its May meeting on Monday-the 2nd May-( we always meet on the First Monday of the month)
Our theme this month chosen by Maureen was "Operetta and Musical-"1860 to 1960-
And we had a wonderful selection to listen to-and words to appreciate-
Listed below are some of the choices-
This is my Beloved-from the musical "Kismet",which had borrowed the music of Borodin-
Ariadne auf Naxos,Carousel,Puccini--La Boheme,You are my Hearts Delight- from the 1929 operetta "Land of Smiles".
Der Rosencavalier-Strauss-with the words which some of us related to----
"There comes a moment when time is all we feel,All the world talks of it,our souls are filled with it,on every face its mark will show,each mirror berays it,all through my dreams it is flowing,It flows in silence trickling as in an hour glass,
Sometimes I rise in the dead of night ,go to my clocks and stop them every one,And yet,to be afraid of time is useless---------"!
We watched some of Iolanthe -performed at the Minack theatre in Cornwall-Other musicals we heard were -South Pacific,Oklahoma,The Boy Friend,The Student Prince,and \Madam Butterfly.
Our next meeting will be 6th June-10-30a.m.- In Orphir and Susan has chosen the theme-South America-
