Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.
Keep moving.
U3A PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP 1
by Tim Wright - 21:07 on 30 September 2015
Nine of us met at the Sands of Wright today in glorious sunshine and light wind ,an ideal day to be beside the seaside . Most opted for the walk around the two small lochans and over to the beach on the north side .Lots of late flowers ,some Bull Rushes and a profusion of Lichens made for interesting compositions . A few duck flew around and the Swans swam serenely along with their Cygnets. An Otter was photographed but the Bow tie around its neck and its's static pose with a fixed grin made closeup photography simple . Eventually we set off for tea and shortbread at the Sands in Burray .
The Caithness trip photos were perused and what an excellent selection we had, with the gardens at the Castle of Mey providing excellent flower photos, while the Castle Town quarry walk had sculptures ,harbour scenes and a variety of stone studies .John O 'Groats featured in various guises from the obligatory sign post shot of the group to the threatening rain ,which eventually fell upon us as we enjoyed our fish and chips outside. There were a couple of comic photos of a man who had visited the Ladies by mistake and one of a plea for custom being answered by a couple of Starlings .All in all great photos of a truly lovely day trip.
"Decay /Destruction", the monthly project ,gave us dead birds ,mummified fish ,sheep bones, a dead Dragon fly and a lot of shriveling fruit and flowers . All excellent photos but none that you would want to have on your sitting room wall !
Next month the meeting will be on October 28th at 11 am meeting at Happy Valley and then to the Standing Stones for lunch .Tom has agreed to provide an alternative should the weather prove wet . He will send out the reminder and keep you up dated if the plans change due to weather .The project is "Shadow/Shadows " (without Cliff Richard !)
I will be back in early December with a sun tan and a hint of an Australian accent .
Until then G'day and keep clicking ,
Tim
PS PS I attach a couple of photos for your amusement including one I would have put into the Shadows project.
