Welcome to Stromness Museum 

On Thursday of Shopping Week there will be a presentation at 7.30 on the  lives of Dr John Login, along with several other members of his family who made their mark in 19th century India, and Login’s ward Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Punjab.  

The 2014 Summer Exhibition includes the highly acclaimed Singh Twins' painting “Casualty of War: A portrait of Maharaja Duleep Singh” and courtly jewellery that once belonged to Duleep Singh loaned by the National Museums of Scotland. Stromness-born John Login was apppointed the young maharaja’s guardian following the annexation of the Punjab. Login's parents owned Login’s Inn and The Well.

The Museum moved to this building in the mid nineteenth century There have been many additions in that time. There is always something new to see among artefacts of national and international significance. 

Stromness Museum is an independent museum maintained and managed by a committee of volunteers elected from the members of the Orkney Natural History Society Museum. 

Running costs are met from entrance fees, donations and grants.

Opening hours 

April - September 10am -5pm,  Sun- Sat

October - March   11am -3.30 pm (closed on Sundays)

Admission charges: Weekly ticket,  come back as often as you like for 7 days.  

Adult £4.50 (concessions £4.00)

Family (2 adults+2 children) £9.00

School pupil £1.00
