Community Gardening

In early 2010 the Development Trust was successful in their bid for £69,185 from the Climate Challenge Fund to build 2 new Community Gardens for the residents of Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre to be able to grow their own vegetables and to have advice on how to do so.

The first garden was an allotment site adjacent to Johnstons Road in the Pier area so that residents of the Pier Houses and Johnstons Road can have access to land to grown their own fruit and vegetables.  Allotments are fully equipped with sheds, composting bins and water butts, and there is a communal polytunnel and shed including rotovator and strimmer for allotment holders to use.  Rousay Allotment Society was set up for those leasing the allotments or those who wished to use the rotovator or strimmer.

The second garden is on land adjacent to the playing field at Rousay Community School.  This is a community resource and will be fully accessible with raised borders and stone paths.  There is a polytunnel and shed with plenty of tools for those wishing to take part in community gardening.

The aim of this project was to help those of us who have yet to develop our gardening skills to have support to learn how to grow our own fruit and vegetables.  In this way we can help to reduce food miles and save on carbon emissions.

If you are interested in leasing an Allotment at the Allotment site in the Pier area, or becoming an Associate Member of the Rousay Allotment Association, which allows you to hire the gardening equipment, please contact Hilary Byland on 01856 821446.  Associate Membership is £5 per annum.
