king street halls

Welcome to the website of Kirkwall East Church.

We are a Church of Scotland Eco Congregation whose focus is on worship and outreach. You are welcome at the King Street Halls whether you have come to worship in the Upper Room or to use it or one of the other areas for another purpose.

The Sunday service starts at 10 am
March, June, September and December at 11.15 am. (see Calendar details)

After morning worship tea, coffee juice and biscuits are served downstairs in The Hub.

Future Focus: The Way Ahead is a resource that allows congregations to explore the way forward. It is fun! We engaged in this exercise at Kirkwall East two years ago and came up with priorities (worship and outreach) and a series of tangible actions points which we implemented over the last two years: we took part in 2018 Year of Young People initiative, we made progress towards streaming our services online and we had a variety of Bible studies to meet the needs of different people.

Now we’re looking to set priorities for another two years and to this end we decided to hold Future Focus in worship on the Sunday morning of the 25th August. It will be a café style service downstairs in the Hub (where there are toilets nearby), facilitated by Rob Rawson, Church of Scotland Mission Development Worker. This means getting nice refreshments as we work! The normal ‘after service’ tea/coffee time will not take place but in effect, will instead happen during our time together.

We will work in small groups around tables to engage in a series of exercises that explore the life of the church and community. Some of the questions we will explore will be:

In two years’ time, building on our strengths, what would we like to see?

In two years’ time, how would we like the church to be known in this parish, not just by church members, but by those who currently have no connection with the church?

What first steps can we take to realise our dreams?

By the end of the service, there should be a sense of future direction, some action points and priorities. Some of these may be expressed with clarity and be backed by a broad consensus; others will be vague ideas or glimpses of what might be. The Session will take those forward and start implementing our common vision.

Finally, and importantly, Future Focus is, of course, a spiritual process, as we discern the Spirit’s leading and so it’s highly appropriate to have worship at the same time. We hope and pray you can join us for that very important time in the life of the congregation.
