A warm welcome to the East Church!

We are a Church of Scotland eco-congregation. We are linked with Shapinsay Church of Scotland and partnered with Bindula Parish – Bindula, Nahache and Ntundama congregations – in the Presbytery of Thyolo in Malawi. Our priorities are worship and outreach.

Advent and Christmas 2020

Advent this year will be very different. There will be weekly joint Kirkwall Council of Churches services prepared by ministers, priests and church leaders from the 8 churches in Kirkwall. They are all available through the regular channels (see below) or through the Kirkwall Council of Churches Facebook page.

On the 7th December at 6 pm we would like to invite you to a short loss service on Zoom to help families and friends to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones. For details of how to join by Zoom link or phone, please contact our minister, Rev Julia Meason, 874789, JMeason@churchofscotland.org.uk. You may wish to have a candle ready to light at home during the service in order to remember your loved one.

This Christmas Eve we are offering a Zoom service of (abridged) lessons and carols on the 24th at 7 pm. For details on how to join us, please contact Julia or Colin. If you are joining us by phone, have your hymnbook ready and you can join in with the singing!

You can access our services in any one of  four ways:

Þ Through Kirkwall East linked with Shapinsay Facebook page where our joint services (between Kirkwall East, Shapinsay and Moncur Memorial Church Stronsay) are published every Sunday: https://www.facebook.com/kirkwalleastlinkedwithshapinsay

Þ Through the YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Yg_uFSQsU7UWDC2SSnyCA

Or search for Kirkwall East Church, Shapinsay Church or Moncur Memorial Church.

Þ By dialling 01856 404667 from your phone and listening to the audio recording of the service. You will be charged as you would normally be for a local phone call (and that of course depends on your contract).

Þ By getting a script of the service by e-mail (do contact the minister if you would like that).

Reopening for private prayer

We are limited to a maximum of 36 in the Kirkwall East church for any acts of public worship so from the 26th September we will begin with arrangements of opening our church for private prayer only every Saturday. We will try to re-start other services as soon as it is safe and practical to do so. When our church is open, we would respectfully ask everyone to act responsibly and safely at all times. This means ensuring:

 that you are not exhibiting any Covid19 symptoms

 that you have not been in contact with anyone who has recently tested positive for the virus (and you should therefore be self isolating!)

 that you are not putting yourself at risk if you have any underlying health conditions or general frailty.

We are constantly reviewing the situation, taking on board the latest Scottish Government advice as well as advice from the Church of Scotland and our own Presbytery.

CHURCH OPENINGS FOR PRIVATE PRAYER ONLY

every Saturday starting on the 26th September 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME TO CHURCH:

The wearing of face masks in church is now mandatory. Please bring your own masks with you when visiting church.

You will be required to sanitise your hands as you enter and exit church. Hand sanitisers will be available.

Please enter and exit via the main entrance door ONLY. Stewards will ask you to fill in a slip with your contact details for test and trace purposes and signs will direct you up the stairs and into the designated seats. When leaving church please exit via the main door and follow the signs. Please give way to others who may be exiting at the same time.

Seating areas will be clearly marked to ensure the required social distancing. All children should be accompanied by an adult.

All hymnbooks and Bibles will be removed so please bring your own for your perusal.

Looking forward to welcoming you back in!
