Welcome to Orkney Field Club's website.
The Field Club was founded in 1959 to encourage the study and conservation of the natural heritage of Orkney. It is a recognised charity (No. SC 012459).
New members are always welcome - come to a meeting or see below - our interests vary widely and you do not have to be an expert!
Seen something interesting? Please see our Records page, which includes Orkney species lists. Our latest plan - SPOT THE SPECIES! - is to encourage everyone to look out for, and send in records of, any Orkney wildlife. We have a particular focus on recording giant puffballs and other fungi just now. Click here to read more and to see photos!
Conservation: the Club's practical conservation activity is focused on the Durkadale plantation, set up 25 years ago to provide a refuge for native tree species, and on an area of Orphir heathland generously bequeathed to us.
Consultation: Club members share considerable expertise so we are frequently consulted on local conservation and environmental issues.
Winter programme: between September and April, we run our monthly "Club Night" programme of talks and lectures. Please click here to read about recent meetings.
Outdoor programme: an important part of our programme (see the latest Newsletter) is organising field meetings covering a wide variety of life forms, including visits to the outer isles.
Communication with Members: please see the Publications section for recent Newsletters; members who would like to receive urgent Club news by e-mail are invited to e-mail the Chairman.
Correspondence can be sent to the Orkney Field Club, c/o Kirkwall Library, 44 Junction Road, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1AG; or email the Chairman.
Bulletin: publication of our annual Bulletin, the Orkney Naturalist, is perhaps the most important event of our year. Copies of the 2011 edition are available at £6 (free to members) - click here for more information. Please contact the Chairman if you would like to write an article for a future Bulletin.
