Learning Disabilities Advocacy
Adults with a learning disability have a fundamental right to have an independent advocate.
Life can be difficult if you have a learning difficulty, but you are entitled to have the right to make your own decision in all areas of life.
Not all people are born with a learning disability but it can result from illness or an accident.
What the advocate can do for you:
- Work as equal partners.
- Ensure your voice is listened to and your views considered or speak on your behalf.
- Free from conflicts of interest.
- Challenge, question and hold professionals to account when decisions have been made that you don’t agree with.
- Support you at meetings.
Everyone with a learning disability has the right to life, make their own decisons and the right not to be subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment.
