VOLUNTEER CITIZEN ADVOCATES We are seeking to recruit volunteers of all ages who are independent of care providers to make one-to-one relationships with another person who has difficulty in expressing themselves as clearly as they might want. A citizen advocate does not have to be an expert in any field, neither is a citizen advocate anything to do with the legal profession. A citizen advocate is a person who is prepared to visit their partner regularly, to share a fortnightly cup of tea together, and get to know one another. As the relationship develops, the advocate gradually becomes able to be a voice for their partner on any matter that the partner may want to have raised.
Citizen advocacy is not a befriending scheme. Citizen advocacy is not a sympathy lobby. Citizen advocates are not paid by anybody at anytime. Citizen advocacy is arguably one of the most rewarding forms of volunteering available where personal fulfillment can be very high indeed. We are particularly seeking to recruit citizen advocates who have experience of communicating with people with severe learning disabilities and/or people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. We are also seeking to recruit citizen advocates who have experience of communication with people with dementia. If you, or a friend - or both of you! - would like to volunteer to become a citizen advocate with this registered charity then please CONTACT us by clicking on contact in the menu or by phoning the advocacy Service Manager on 01856 870111. We can arrange for you to have an informal chat with a citizen advocate to find out how rewarding an opportunity this is.
