U3A Music group - Happenings for September

We met on Monday September the 4th  in Orphir-and our topic was the Oboe-

We are very happy to have three new members-which is super-Which brings our number up to about 15-

Naturally we had several concertos for Oboe-by Vincenso Bellini, another by Handel-and another by Vaugan Williams-

A couple of Quartets-Mozart and Albinoni-Other works by Zippoli,Bach,StraussBerlioz,Moriconi,Prokoviev-

Soloists included-Nicholas Daniel-Anhtony Camden,and Gordon Hunt-

Some of us supply handouts which give further background to the piece selected-which makes it very interesting-I E -biography of the instrumentalist-details of the instrument-ect.

In a lighter mode we had a few (awful ) Oboe jokes-

One of the ( slightly better ones)

Q-What is the definition of a half step?

A-Two Oboists playing in unison.

We also learned a bit of the history of the instrument-and of Howarth-leading makers in London-

An interesting meeting

Our next one will be on October the 2nd  chez Glenys-in Kirkwall

Address-

Koonawarra, Heathery Loan, St Ola - 873084

And the theme selected is  the Clarinet-

We break for refreshments and time usually allows to play two items each-Do join us

Angela
