Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

U3A Photography Group One - August 2015

by Tim Wright - 21:01 on 05 August 2015

Eleven of us made the trip to the Ness of Brodgar Dig today in dry sunny weather for a change. We had an excellent talk by the Guide for over an hour. The main photographic interest focused, for me, on the different Archaeological Diggers, a mixed bunch if ever there was. We saw some stunning finds and I hear that there is a very recent find of pottery with square markings on unlike anything so far seen. I hope you got some good photos.
Our trip to the Standing Stones for lunch was abandoned as 2 large bus loads of people had beaten us to it. We instead went to the Stromness Hotel which wasn't busy at all. It is a place I often go to, when I have been out walking, as it seldom overrun and does just the right lunch menu.
We looked at the photos of Binsgarth Woods. The Monks Hood, a photogenic toadstool, the burn and the dappled light from the tree canopy caught the eye. The poppies outside the house before the public footpath were in all their glory and captured by many, but the bins in the background made for a distraction to the eye. Perhaps they should be put further up the road by the gate and labeled Garth with an arrow pointing to the woods !
The monthly project of "Circle/Round", that I thought would prove difficult, was anything but. Close ups of the centre of flowers, plates of food, submarine netting, mines. pavement light (with condensation) and a rather threatening flower from David and many more imaginative interpretations made for a feast of circular objects. Thanks to all who took part with such a great selection of ideas.
This month's project is "Food /Drink", suggested by a member who was very hungry after our search for a lunch time meal !
Next month, the proposal is to take two cars over on the first Ferry to Gills at 7.45 and have a day in Caithness coming back on the 6.30 from Gills or maybe 7 pm from Scrabster.
Keep Clicking ,
Tim
