Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

ART GROUP SEPTEMBER 2012

by Gloria O'Shea - 17:36 on 20 September 2012

This 'summer' has been difficult weatherwise, with few members attending regularly and we now have the winter season ahead of us.  So I have been wondering how meetings will proceed in the coming months.  Last Monday 17th September I and 2 of the members attended an Art class in Stromness having informed several of the members.

Here are the details for those who might be interested.

Informal Art Class run for several years by Jan Anderson.

Venue,  Stromness Community Centre, top of Church Road, Stromness

Meeting on Monday's  1.30 pm.- 4pm.  £1.00 including tea.

It is a good meeting room and is  to be found 1st on your right after going through the entrance, informal means just a place to bring your art materials where obviously one is free to just do ones own thing, but of course I will be on hand for anyone who would like some know how or give ideas.

Three of us went last week and found it not only quiet but also relaxing as Jan plays a nice variety of music mid to classical  on his cd player.  So what I am suggesting is that this class maybe what you would like for the winter months, or we can still meet outside of this once monthly, or just come to the class any Monday that suits.

I would very much appreciate a reply to this email, suggestions welcome.

looking forward to hearing from you       Gloria O'Shea
