20 April 2021Just a thought

God is at work in our lives, invisibly at work, like a seed growing in the darkness, like yeast rising in a loaf.  The work of faith is to identify and make sense of the thin places.  That means never losing heart.  It means to keep taking, and planting, and mixing in faith.  It is no accident that small acts affect lives far beyond our view, our power, our lifetime.  That's true because God is faithful.  God is at work in the invisible world that rubs up against, and breaks through, into this visible one, while remaining invisible to us.

 Psalm 4: (lectionary Psalm for this week)

Answer me as I call, O God my Saviour;

In my distress give me room,

be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.

How long, fine people, shall my glory be scorned,

while you love what is worthless,

and set your heart on a lie?

Yet know that the Lord wonderfully answers

the one who is close to him;

the Lord will hear when I call to him.

Tremble then, and sin no longer;

commune with your heart upon your couch

and be still.

Offer the sacrifices that make for peace,

and put your trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, O that we might see good!

The light of your face has fled from us, O Lord.

You will put joy in my heart again,

more than when their corn and wine abound.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Prayer:

Lord, by your grace may we learn to be in awe and sin no longer, to commune with our heart and be still before you, that when many lose heart, we may abide in confidence that yo will wonderfully answer allour needs.

Translation and Prayer by John Eaton

I don’t know if Facebook has ever made the lame to walk, but it has, beyond all doubt, enabled the dumb to speak.

Because he lives:

Because he lives I can face tomorrow,

Because he lives all fear is gone.

Because I know he holds the future,

And life is worth the living,

Just because he lives.

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is like expecting the bull not to charge you because you are a vegetarian.

The Way of Gratitude:

Around us, life bursts forth with miracles – a glass of water, a ray of sunshine, a leaf, a caterpillar, a flower, laughter, raindrops.  If you live in awareness, it is easy to see miracles everywhere.  Each human being is a multiplicity of miracles.  Eyes that see thousands of colours, shapes, and forms; ears that hear a bee flying or a thunderclap; a brain that ponders a speck of dust as easily as the entire cosmos; a heart that beats in rhythm with the heartbeat of all beings.  When we are tired and feel discouraged by life's daily struggles, we may not notice these miracles, but they are always there.

Original Blessing:

I saw that God never began to love us. … We have always been in God's foreknowledge, known and loved from without beginning. … We were made for love.

— Julian of Norwich (English Mystic, died ca. 1416)

Comment by Matthew Fox:

To say we have been 'loved from without beginning' is to speak of original blessing rather than original sin. Julian breaks with Augustine and others who have preached about an original sin, and she sides with all those who know we have been loved before the beginning.

Do you agree with Julian that we were made for love? How are we doing? What levels and kinds of love have you tasted? What do you still have to learn about love?

See how good and how pleasant it is,

when pilgrims dwell together as one.

It is like the precious ointment on the head,

that ran down upon the beard,

ran down upon the beard of Aaron,

and on to the collar of his garments,

as though the dew of Hermon

ran down on the hills of Zion.

For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,

even life for evermore.  (Psalm 133)

Prayer:

Grant to your people, good Lord, the spirit of unity, that they may dwell together in your love, and so bear to all the world the ointment of your healing and the dew of your blessing.

(Translation and Prayer by John Eaton)
