I don’t know if Facebook has ever made the lame to walk, but it has, beyond all doubt, enabled the dumb to speak.

Because he lives:

Because he lives I can face tomorrow,

Because he lives all fear is gone.

Because I know he holds the future,

And life is worth the living,

Just because he lives.

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is like expecting the bull not to charge you because you are a vegetarian.

The Way of Gratitude:

Around us, life bursts forth with miracles – a glass of water, a ray of sunshine, a leaf, a caterpillar, a flower, laughter, raindrops.  If you live in awareness, it is easy to see miracles everywhere.  Each human being is a multiplicity of miracles.  Eyes that see thousands of colours, shapes, and forms; ears that hear a bee flying or a thunderclap; a brain that ponders a speck of dust as easily as the entire cosmos; a heart that beats in rhythm with the heartbeat of all beings.  When we are tired and feel discouraged by life's daily struggles, we may not notice these miracles, but they are always there.

Original Blessing:

I saw that God never began to love us. … We have always been in God's foreknowledge, known and loved from without beginning. … We were made for love.

— Julian of Norwich (English Mystic, died ca. 1416)

Comment by Matthew Fox:

To say we have been 'loved from without beginning' is to speak of original blessing rather than original sin. Julian breaks with Augustine and others who have preached about an original sin, and she sides with all those who know we have been loved before the beginning.

Do you agree with Julian that we were made for love? How are we doing? What levels and kinds of love have you tasted? What do you still have to learn about love?

See how good and how pleasant it is,

when pilgrims dwell together as one.

It is like the precious ointment on the head,

that ran down upon the beard,

ran down upon the beard of Aaron,

and on to the collar of his garments,

as though the dew of Hermon

ran down on the hills of Zion.

For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,

even life for evermore.  (Psalm 133)

Prayer:

Grant to your people, good Lord, the spirit of unity, that they may dwell together in your love, and so bear to all the world the ointment of your healing and the dew of your blessing.

(Translation and Prayer by John Eaton)

A Book Excerpt on Joy:

Ordinary happiness depends on happenstance.  Joy is that extraordinary happiness that is independent of what happens to us.  Good luck can make us happy, but it cannot give us lasting joy.  The root of joy is gratefulness.  We tend to misunderstand the link between joy and gratefulness.  We notice that joyful people are grateful and suppose that they are grateful for their joy.  But the reverse is true: their joy springs from gratefulness.  If one has all the good luck in the world, but takes it for granted, it will not give one joy.  Yet even bad luck will give joy to those who manage to be grateful for it.  We hold the key to lasting happiness in our own hands.  For it is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.

As each morning’s news reminds us, we live in a fragile, uneasy world, where truth and trust do not sit comfortably together, and violence instead of dialogue becomes the way to end an argument or dispute. Gracious God, may your love be seen and your truth proclaimed through the many lives and voices of your children, and in its brightness may those who now walk in shadows choose to move into your light, and embrace your mercy, love and peace.  Amen.

Those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,

‘Hosanna!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ (Mark 11:9-10)
