The Task of Religion:

"The task of religion is not to turn us into proper believers; it is to deepen the personal within us, to embrace the power of life, to expand our consciousness, in order that we might see things that eyes do not normally see.  It is to seek a humanity that is not governed by the need for security, but is expressed in the ability to give ourselves away.  It is to live not frightened by death, but rather called by the reality of death to go into our humanity so deeply and so passionately that even death is transcended.  That is the call of the fully human one, the Jesus of the transformed consciousness."

 - John Shelby Spong in Eternal Life. (Spong died 12.09.21)

A Prayer:

Dear Jesus, today I call on you in a special way.

Mostly I come asking for favours.  Today I'd like just to be in your presence.

Let my heart respond to your Love.

How wonderful it is to be able to enter into your presence Lord.

No matter what time it is, no matter where I am, I need only to speak your name.

Grant that I may always choose to follow you.

Keep me ever mindful of your ways, of your love and concern for all people.

Lord, you have engraved my name on the palm of your hand.

Even if others forget me, you never will.

Amen.  (from Sacred Space; edited)

O God, save me by your name, and judge me by your might.

O God, hear my supplication; give heed to the words of my mouth

Your name will I praise, Lord, for it is gracious, for it shall deliver me from every trouble.

Like a rock, God is under our feet.

Like a roof, God is over our heads.

Like the horizon, God is beyond us.

Like water in a pitcher, God is within us and in the pouring out of us.

Like a pebble in the sea, we are in God.

Let us go out and change our world as God has changed our lives.

-- John Howell in On the Threshold by Elizabeth J. Andew

Give us a pure heart that we may see thee,

A humble heart that we may hear thee,

A heart of love that we may serve thee,

A heart of faith that we may love thee.

The Lord is kind and does what is right; our God is merciful.

The Lord watches over the foolish; when I was helpless, he saved me.

I said to myself, “Relax, because the Lord takes care of you.”

Lord, you saved me from death.

You stopped my eyes from crying; you kept me from being defeated.

So I will walk with the Lord in the land of the living.

 - Psalm 116: 5-9; CEV,  (Lectionary Psalm for this week)
