What else have we been up to..?

 

Well, apart from the SongShares, we’ve also been sharing the songs in the Big Orkney Song Project portfolio with many other people throughout the duration of the Project.

Below is a short summary of what else we’ve been up to

 2008

·         Maritime Societies of the Viking and Medieval World Conference: entertainment from the BOSP collection

 

·         Support Acts: the BOSP songs were used to open a concert by renowned international artist Eric Bogle

 

·         Support Acts: the BOSP songs were used to open a concert by the renowned and internationally known Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain

2008/9

·         Care Home Visits: eight care homes across Orkney were treated to some traditional song

2009

·         Cruise Liner Tours: a tour taking in the delights of Orkney’s whisky and musical heritage, where BOSP songs were used

 

·         Norway Constitution Day: the official ceremony had entertainment from the BOSP collection

 

·         Orkney Folk Festival’s Mixter Maxter: Aimee worked with pupils from Orkney’s secondary schools, as well as having BOSP songs sung by both the Songshop Choir and Songshop Trio at their gigs

 

·        Orkney Heritage Society’s Annual General Meeting: the project was explained to the members

 

·        Orkney-Norway Friendship Association 20th Anniversary meeting: the members were treated to some traditional song

 

·         St Magnus Festival Foy: Thora Linklater composed an original song and a song from the Balfour Collection in the Orkney Library and Archive were sung

 

·         St Magnus Festival: BOSP songs were sung at the launch of the Festival’s brochure, held in Orkney College

 

·         Stromness Shopping Week Review: BOSP songs were part of the entertainment

2009 & 2010

·         Jo Davies Dancers: BOSP songs were sung by the dancers at their workshops

 2010

·         Heart of Neolithic Orkney Ranger Service: BOSP songs were performed at the fantastically well attended "Voices in the Landscape" event organised by the Ranger Service at the Ring of Brodgar on the longest day of the year, 21st June.

·         Madrigirls: a free concert by the Glasgow Madrigirls featured a BOSP song, discovered through our archive

 

·         Orcadian Studies Evening Classes: the tradition of Orkney song was explained and demonstrated

 

·         Orkney Folk Festival: once again featured BOSP songs by different artists

·         Orkney Traditional Music Project: BOSP songs were used in workshops at both week-long summer schools

 

·        Orkney Green Badge Tourist Guiding Training Course: the tradition of Orkney song was explained and demonstrated to the prospective new Orkney Tour Guides

 

·         St Magnus Festival Foy: original and traditional tunes were sung by Aimee and Brian Cromarty

 

·         Stromness Yellow Badge Tourist Guiding Training Course: the tradition of Orkney song was explained and demonstrated to the prospective new Stromness Tour Guides

 

We took the opportunity whilst in Westray for our SongShare to visit Kalisgarth Care Home, only one of the 8 care homes across the County visited as part of the Project.

 

And we are very pleased to report that Saltfishforty used two of the BOSP songs on their newest cd release Netherbow, The Bride's Lament and Ring on her Hand, the lyrics of which are from the Balfour Collection.
