Derek Firth wins Loutitt Singles

Derek Firth won the Loutitt Singles with Ian Linklater runner-up, they are pictured receiving their trophies from league President Craig Taylor & Vice President Robert Stanger. 45 players entered. Thanks to the Legion and all players who entered.

The Williamson’s A and B leagues rolled into week 3 and there were some tremendous individual as well as team performances.  Keith Brumpton stole the show with three high finishes for the golf club as they narrowly overcame the Untouchables in a game which also saw the Linklater brothers make multiple marks on the card for either side.  The Legion proved too clinical for the Wanderers as they turned them over 9-3.  Davie Henderson hit form on Monday night in the Quoyburray Derby as it ended up all square, but that was to pale in comparison to his two 180s and three high checkouts the following night as they lost 4-8 to Shapinsay.  Shapinsay’s Jamie Marwick wasn’t too shy in hitting the big stuff that night himself.  Sanday produced this week’s shock result, defeating the Commodores 8-4.

In the B league on Tuesday night Gary Wilson continued the big hitting madness for the week, hitting a hat trick of 180s as the Nomads steamrolled the Sands 11-1.  The Murrays continued their drive for league success with a 10-2 demolition of the Muppets.  The Young Loons put in another impressive display but just fell short, losing 7-5 to the Bilco Boys.  The Vikings finally got their season off to a start, beating the Ale Stars 10-2, with the Ale Stars also losing 8-4 to Sanday B earlier in the week.  In the final B fixture of the week Tankerness proved worthy adversaries for the Streamline team and the Tankerness crew took yet another close game 7-5.

However, it was in the A league on Wednesday evening that Eddie Drever decided to save the best for last, hitting an astounding five 180s as well as a 120 checkout for the Warriors in what looks to have been a really good game with the Legion Arrows.  A tremendous effort from Eddie, although it falls slightly short of what is believed to be the record of six in a match, coming in the same season several years ago from firstly Iain Wilkie and shortly after Kevin Gray, who achieved it with a set of pub darts!

46 players entered the Loutitt Singles, the first ranking points competition of the season.

Held in the Kirkwall Legion on Friday night, players were all keen to earn early points which go towards qualifying to play against Shetland in April.

Among those watching the proceedings was league secretary Jim ‘Tattie Bogle’ Scollie, who was greeted by the players after a spell of being ‘off the beat’ due to illness. It was grand to see him back at the darts, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Back to the darts, and as can often happen some big names can fall early on.

In the quarter-finals Stevie Linklater beat James Flett to progress, Derek Firth beat Stuart Thomson, while Brett Dickinson over came Steven Low, and Ian Linklater put out Simon Parry.

In the semi-finals Derek stopped Stevie’s run in a tight 4-3 match. Stevie’s brother Ian played team-mate Brett, ending Brett’s good run in the competition by the score of 4-2, despite Brett checking out a 128.

This was the third year in a row that Ian had reached the final, but it was not to prove third time lucky, as on form Derek took the title and the 12 ranking points with a 5-2 scoreline, hitting a 180 and checking out 126 in the final.
