What a day of darts, as 48 players mustered at the Masonic to play for the Northlight Charity Fancy Dress Singles Trophies.

There were 22 gents and 26 ladies — all in fancy dress.

We had a few Indians and cowboys, some pirates, a Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, a devil, a Woody Woodpecker and lots more, including an Elvis.

With some of the players’ throwing arms a bit restricted by their costumes, there were some surprise results and, by the last 16 stage, there were seven ladies and nine men still standing.

But only three ladies made it to the quarter-finals, with one getting to the semi-final, where Katy Croy (Phil the Power Taylor) lost out to Iain Wilkie. In the other semi-final, Malcolm Coghill, who had been playing great darts all day, made the final after overcoming Hippy, who had done very well to get so far, as he doesn’t play regular darts.

In the final, Malcolm raced into an early 2-0 lead, only for Iain to pull it back to 2-2 and, in a nail-biting last, deciding leg, it was Malcolm who picked up the £500 first prize, as Ian had to settle for £250.

Malcolm also picked up the under-30s prize, and Katy took the top ladies’ prize.

The top fancy dress prize went to Maureen Firth, but nobody was a loser, as there was a massive raffle.

At the end of the day over £6000 was raised for charity, an amazing amount for the event which the late Karen Garrioch worked so hard for.

In other darts news, the Liz Stevenson Orkney Open Mixed Doubles darts takes place in the Masonic Club in Kirkwall this Saturday, June 14.

Organised by Jacqui Stevenson, names have to be in by 3pm, and players must enter with a partner.

There is an entry fee of £5 per couple, and there is guaranteed prize money of £100, but the higher the entry the higher the prize money will be.

The second qualifying game to find two players to take on the pros in August take splace the following weekend. 

It’s in the Royal Hotel, Stromness, on Friday, June 20, with names due by 7.30 p.m., and it’s open to any player, male or female, in Orkney.

Then, the week after, it’s back to Kirkwall’s Masonic Club for the third and fourth games on June 27, and July 4.

Tickets for the game at Picky on August 30 are now on sale.

Registration books are still available for the season from the secretary.
