Cricket cup week

There was a good turn out for three of the four cricket trophies. Only the ‘B’ league team cup had a poor entry.
It all started on Monday with the Lynnfield Cup, with eight of the 11 teams turning up, and some very interesting games.
There were real surprises and, by semi-final time, it was the top four teams remaining, with the Legion beating Sanday 3-0 and the Wanderers taking care of the Untouchables 3-1.
But Wanderers couldn’t handle the Legion, who ran out 3-1 winners. That was the only game the Legion dropped.

What a difference on the Tuesday, when only five teams from the 12 ‘B’ teams came forward for the Foubister Cup — and one of them only had three players, which didn’t make much difference, as the Shore ran out 3-1 winners over the Legion Arrows in the final.

The big one was on Friday, with 24 players entering the Cricket Singles and Doubles — ten up on last year.
There were some cracking games in both, with records being broken in both events, but the night belonged to the Golf Club as they took both trophies.
In the doubles, the strong pairing of Bruce Moar and Stevie Linklater proved too good for everyone, and they ran out winners over the Legion pair of Kevin Gray and Neil Croy 3-0.
The same pair contested the singles final, with Stevie taking it 3-1.

Not many 180s are usually scored in cricket, but that changed on Friday, with 12 being scored by Brett Dickenson, Brian Murray, Michael Moodie, Mike Bain, Bruce Moar and Ian Wilkie, with three from Kevin Gray and Stevie Linklater, which included back-to-back ones in the singles final. That’s 280 runs in cricket terms, and even more rare is three bulls, or six wickets, but both Stevie and Kevin managed them.

It is back to league business once again, but a busy period is coming up, starting Friday night, with the Pit Stop Singles, held in the Golf Club. It is a ranking points event, but is open to any player in Orkney.

Then, next Saturday, (November 10), it’s the Davy Cooper Memorial Singles Cup.
It is also an open event, and ladies can also enter. All proceeds go to charity.
