Qualifers continue

Two great days of darts got under way on Friday out at the Rockworks bar (Commodore), with the third qualifying round.
There was not a big turn out, with only 30 players entering – well down on last year.
But it was fine to see a lot of new young players taking part.
Thirteen non-Kirkwall players entered, but by quarter-final time only one was left, and he exited there, making it an all-Kirkwall semi-final, with Stevie Linklater securing his place at Picky with a 3-0 win over Michael Muir Snr, who played well to get there.
Joining Stevie in the final was Robbie Stanger, with a 3-1 win over Bruce Moar.
A very good final saw Robbie come out on top with a 3-1 win.
The only lady player was, once again, Catherine Symonds, but there was no luck for Cath, going out in the first round.
So, it is on now for the final qualifying game on Friday, in the Legion Club. Names by 7.30 p.m. and, remember, six of the top players who have already qualified won’t be there. Also, it is open, for any player in Orkney, male of female, over 18.
The darts continued on Saturday, with the Royal British Legion Club holding a Jubilee Singles.
A rather disappointing entry of only 20 took part, with six ladies, and they did the fairer sex proud, as two reached the semi-finals with Noreen Bain being joined by daughter-in-law Suzy.
But both went out to two of the top boys, Stevie and Craig.
Stevie picked up the lovely trophy with a 3-1 win.
With both ladies making the semi-finals, there had to be a play-off, which Suzy won, beating her mother-in-law 2-0 to take the ladies’ prize.
Karin Garrioch had the highest check out of 118, and got a bottle of plonk.
Tomorrow, Friday, will see the end of the 2011-12 season, and it is time to look ahead to the new season, which kicks off with the AGM on Thursday, August 16, in the Legion Club, but entries are required before then, so collect the registration books from the secretary, and get them back by August 12. Also, names for committee are required by August 12.
