Derek retains Loutitt Singles

There was a good turn-out of 41 players for the first of the ranking points games. The Louttit Singles, and it included ten ‘B’ League players, but only Derek Ward Jnr got into the points rounds. That’s the last 16.

By quarter-final time, the line-up looked like a select event, with every one of the players having played against Shetland at some time.
Semi-finals came up with two players from the Legion, including defending champion Derek Firth, plus one from the Commodores and one from the Wanderers.
And it was the Legion duo who made the final, with Ivan Leslie beating Brian Moar and Derek beating Robbie Stanger, both by 3-0 scores.
In the final, both players turned on the style. The score of 4-1 in favour of Derek looks one-sided, but it was far from that. But the first dart finishing by Derek, with Ivan waiting to throw, carried the day.
It was great to see so many of the young boys taking part, and a special mention for Michael Muir Jnr, who played well all night.
There were nine 180s scored during the night.
There’s no change at the top of the Williamson’s ‘A’ League, and both top teams had good wins.
The Legion beat Quoyburray ‘B’ 10-2 and the Untouchables overcame Meadowbank 9-3.
Not far behind are Sanday, who recorded another good win – 7-5 over the Golf Club – and no joy for Wanderers ‘B’ as they went down 10-2 to the Untouchables ‘A’.
And what a win for Quoyburray out in Holm, as they beat the Commodores 7-5.
Wanderers ‘B’ and Quoyburray ‘B’ are the only teams without any points.
In the Williamson’s ‘B’ League, there’s no stopping RBLM, as they hammered Shapinsay 11-1.
The last time Shapinsay were in the ‘B’ League, in 2008/09, they won it.
Another big score saw the Murray Arms beat the Likely Lads 11-1, and there was a 7-5 win for the Bilco Boys out in Tankerness. The Shore ‘2’ also recorded the same score over in Deerness. Still first names only are being used by the Shore ‘2’ team. No score came in from the Shore v Sands game. Points will be deducted, starting next week. The deadline is 12 noon in the Legion Club for score cards.
There were lots of 180s from: Michael Montgomery, Ian Wilkie, David Kirkpatrick, Roy Foubister, Billy Ward, Paddy Kirkpatrick, Ivan Leslie, Kevin Gray, Wilfie Tulloch, Peter Mathieson, Derek Ward Jnr, Archie Yule, Neil Drever, Glen Miller, Keith Brumpton, Michael Muir Jnr, Michael Moodie, and two from Brian Moar and Derek Firth. There was four from Robbie Stanger, a high checkout of a 100 from Paddy. Derek Ward Jnr 102; F. Tait 102; Keith Brumpton 103; Ray Butcher and Robbie Stanger 106.
Robbie also had a 116; Peter Mathieson 106 and 117; 114 from Derek Farmer and Ross Donaldson; Michael Muir Jnr 115 and a high score of 177. There was a 120 from Craig Taylor and Kevin Gray, while Keith Bain scored 126. Keith also had a 129; Ivan Leslie 105 and 127; Paul Foubister 145; Glen Miller 152; and Derek Firth’s table-topping 156 and 158.
That’s the first of the ranking points events over. The next one is the Pit Stop Singles, played in the Golf Club on Friday, November 4.
It’s an open event so any player can take part, but only registered players will receive points.
Before that, on October 28, the Cricket Singles and Doubles will be played. It’s in the Masonic Club. Names by 7.30 pm and, after last year’s poor turnout, the future of the event is in doubt, so it’s up to the players to turn out to make sure it’s not dropped from the fixture list.
There are still some entry fees to come in. The final deadline is October 26.
There will be a committee meeting on Wednesday, October 26, in the Masonic Club, at 8pm.
