Taylor Singles win for Stanger

L to R: Mason Taylor, Robbie Stanger, Ian Linklater and Craig Taylor.

Friday night saw the Legion play host to the penultimate ranking points event of the season, the Taylor Singles. Usually drawing a large entry due to it's importance, it unusually only attracted 38 participants, although this did not detract from the quality on show.

Perhaps the story of the night was 'C' league player Craig Harrison who, in his debut season, was a wire away from reaching a semi-final, eventually being beaten by Graham Firth. Graham himself is having his best ever ranking points season but up against Robbie Stanger it was going to be an uphill task. Graham played well, but Robbie won through 4-1.

Elsewhere Brett Dickinson and Ian Linklater were playing some superb stuff against tough opposition, and eventually they met in the other semi. The tie could have gone either way, but a poor start from Brett cost him as Ian managed to keep enough distance to give him room to finish off.

The final really did have a bit of everything from stellar darts to the mediochre at times, but it made for an exciting match. Ian looked like taking an early lead, only for Robbie to pop in a 180 and a 125 checkout for a 15 darter to pinch it. Ian was having none of that as he hit a 180 himself in taking the second, before Robbie hit back in the third. The fourth leg went to Ian as the pattern of legs going against the throw continued. Ian stopped that rot with a 14 darter in the fifth only for Robbie to checkout the sixth with a 152 finish to draw level at 3-3. Robbie once more broke Ian's throw to go ahead once more only to see a second 180 from Ian landing which helped him claim the eight leg. It was impossible to tell how the final leg would go but the advantage of throw to Ian ultimately made the difference as he won out by 5 legs to 4 to claim the trophy which was presented by Craig and Mason Taylor. A great game to watch by the sizeable crowd remaining, notably made up mainly of lower league players – take note all you primmadonnas in the 'A' league who lose and instantly clear off!
