FAQ

I don't know anything about sailing, can I join the club and take part?

The summer points series runs on Tuesday evenings where boats race round a short course in St. Mary's Bay. If you are interested you can come down and take a look. Quite often there are people needing crew so you could get a sail. You don't need any special skills to crew a Snipe, although it can be chilly on the water (even in summer!) so warm clothing is essential. Being able to swim is an advantage but not essential. If you find you enjoy sailing you might like to join the club.

Can I race other classes at Holm Sailing Club?

The points racing at Holm Sailing Club is done in Snipe dinghies, although the annual regatta is open to all sailing craft.

Is sailing expensive?

Club membership costs at Holm are:

Family Membership      £60
Adult                  £45
Young Person           £15
Senior                 £25

The club membership helps to pay for maintenance and upkeep of club boats including Lena the safety boat. Sailing, like many sports can be expensive, but at Holm Sailing Club we try to keep the sport inclusive by keeping the costs of taking part low.

When is the sailing season?

Most of the Orkney sailing takes place from May to the end of August. The local regattas tend to be in July and August.

Can I get sailing qualifications?

Orkney Sailing Club is an RYA affiliated training centre and run courses for sailing and power boating qualifications. RYA qualifications are recognised in most countries.
