BIRD WATCHING GROUP - APRILTim's Blog March 2014U3A Annual General Meeting Report from the New ChairmanEX-CHAIRMAN'S BLOGBIRD WATCHING GROUP - MarchIndex

The last U3A music gathering was held on 19th January at 10 am at Glenys Alsop’s house - half an hour earlier to make time for the U3A meeting in the afternoon. For the 2nd time we were listening to music for the mighty letter “M” (but leaving Mozart till later). Members as usual brought a very eclectic mix of CDs.
Among early music composers we heard were Muffat (German but of Scottish extraction) and Marin Marais (old French consort music). Lovely too was music by Fanny Mendelssohn and her more famous brother whose music was sung by Kathleen Ferrier, born in 1912. A CD of her singing Mahler’s Song of the Earth wasn’t accepted by Glenys’s system so that will be something for next time perhaps.
Orkney was represented by a composition by Douglas Montgomery which repaid close listening and we heard another fado singer, from Brazil I think. Glenn Miller’s Band and a John Rutter piece with the title “M’ came up too.
A few people think it would be good to listen to some longer works in full and perhaps the opportunity will arise with Mozart in future as we may be watching an opera DVD. We meet next time in Stromness on Thur 23rd Feb hosted by John and Gloria O’Shea. Mozart allowed!
