U3A Botany Group – 29 September 2015

Peter Slater

The Botany group held its last outing of the year on Tuesday afternoon, 29th September, when four of us visited the Ring of Brodgar and took the RSPB walk down the side of Stenness and back up along the roadside to the car park. It was a glorious afternoon, warm and sunny, but late in the season for plants in flower so that many of those we identified we did so from their foliage. Late flowering species we have only spotted on recent trips were Sneezewort, Devil’s bit scabious and Woundwort.

Our complete list for the afternoon was as follows: Devil’s bit scabious, Meadowsweet, Ragwort sp., Red clover, Yellow rattle, Meadow vetchling, Field buttercup, Dock sp., Angelica, Ribwort plantain, Tormentil, Bell heather, Ling, Hogweed, Sneezewort, Marsh horsetail, Daisy, White clover, Rose-bay willowherb, Marsh thistle, Common bog cotton, Marsh cinquefoil, Water mint, Flag iris, Stinging nettle, Common mouse ear, Spear thistle, Chicory, Scentless mayweed, Red campion, Sow thistle, Woundwort, Common vetch.

At the end of the afternoon we repaired to the ice-cream parlour, where we agreed that the group would hold a planning meeting in the spring to decide upon our programme for next summer.
