NewsStromness Sailing Club: Silver Snipe Series WK 1The Silver Snipe Autumn Series began on Sunday, 14 September with two three-lap races over a figure of eight course using buoys 7, 3, 5 and 1. This provided a good mixture of beats, reaches and runs and plenty of scope for the skippers to gain or lose places through tactical decisions as well as boat speed. In the first race, Hassfang battled hard with Go Quickly Red and Mercury Too and came through to win. Go Quickly Red looked a sure bet for second as the last mark was rounded but Mercury Too’s skipper, Fred Johnston, never gives up without a fight and his tactics on the final beat led to him coming through to beat Go Quickly Red over the line. In the second race, Njord had a cracking good start and led the fleet round the first two marks of the course. By the next mark, Go Quickly Red had taken the lead but Njord managed stay amongst the leaders until the end of the long run to mark 3 on the second lap. By then there were four boats close together and overlapped within two boat lengths of the mark, forcing outside boats to go wide. Sails were still spread from the run and as insufficient room was given there were collisions. While the chaos was sorted out, Mercury Too came up from behind to sneak round the mark into second place. This time he could not hold onto his place and by the finish Hassfang and Wild Goose had come through to finish second and third behind Go Quickly Red. Race 1: 1 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 2 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Davy Harcus), 3 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 4 Nemo (James Stockan/Kenny Holland), 5 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Thorfinn Johnston), 6 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Barry Jones). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Hassfang, 3 Wild Goose, 4 Mercury Too, 5 Nemo, 6 Njord. Donnie and Finley Hall manned the safety boat and Isobel Tipler was the starter. Isobel Tipler Stromness SC v Holm SC Interclub Event The Stromness SC v Holm SC Interclub races took place on Sunday, 7 September at Stromness with five Snipes from each club competing over the NE wind course, no. 2. Points were awarded to each boat in each race, according to finishing position, and the cumulative points over all three races contributed to the final result. There were three races and in all three there were some close battles between the teams and many changes of places but in the end Stromness came through to retain the trophy they won last year, with a total of 70 points against Holm’s 95 points. Holm boat, No Fear, was the best individual gaining three second places. The full cumulative results were as follows: Stromness boats: Mercury Too (Fred Johnstone/James Burgon) 8pts; Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet) 13pts; Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Thorfinn Johnston) 13pts; Nemo (James Stockan/Kenny Holland) 14pts; and Scooby (Donnie Hall/Malcolm Tipler) 22pts. Total 70 pts. Holm boats: No Fear (Neil Foubister/Alec Baikie) 6pts; Hamba (Charlie Siderfin/Amy Causer) 16pts; Fiddlesticks (Alan Donaldson/Duncan Johnston) 21pts; Crew Zen (Alan Aim/Rachel Roberts) 22pts; and Topaz (Simon Kemp/James Kemp) 30pts. Total 95pts. Stromness Commodore James Burgon presented the Interclub Trophy to Vice Commodore Donnie Hall. Thanks go to the safety boat crew and to the Holm boats for making the trip through to Stromness to take part in the event. We look forward to another hard fought battle next year. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Race Report for 28 August 2008 Go Quickly Red wins Commodore’s Cup As the Commodore’s Cup series reached the final three races Go Quickly Red was leading by 6pts from last year’s winner, Mercury Too, with Fiddlesticks just 2pts behind her. Technically there was even an outside chance for Bonxie to come through. Fiddlesticks did not sail the last three races earning DNS points and Bonxie’s skipper was on safety duty, earning average points, so it was left to Mercury Too to try to make up the 6pt deficit. In the end the strong westerly wind conditions favoured Go Quickly Red and two wins and a second place secured the trophy for her. Race 1: 1 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Johnny Robertson), 2 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 3 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corse), 4 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Manson), 5 Jual (Ian Johnstone/Daughter). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Hassfang, 3 Jual, 4 Mercury Too, 5 Noringa 3. Race 3: 1 Hassfang, 2 Go Quickly Red, 3 Noringa 3, 4 Jual, Rtd (capsized) Mercury Too. Series Pts: 1 Go Quickly Red (22pts), 2 Mercury Too (36pts) 3 Bonxie (64pts), 4 Fiddlesticks (65pts) The safety boat was manned by James Burgon and Davy Harcus and the starter was Isobel Tipler. The Autumn Silver Snipe Series begins on Sunday, 7 September, with the first race due to start at 2.30pm. Isobel Tipler Stromness Regatta Saturday, 23 August 2008 Stromness Regatta, postponed from July due to bad weather, finally took place on Saturday, 23 August 2008. Twenty eight boats entered, including two yachts, seven yoles, two catamarans, twelve Snipes, one Wayfarer, one Albacore, two Merlin Rockets and one Laser. A number of yachts that had intended to sail in the Regatta on its scheduled July date had been unable to return for the postponed event and Stromness SC hopes to be able to welcome them back again next year. Despite fears that forecast strong winds and rain might again disrupt proceedings, in the event sailing took place in sunshine and a freshening south easterly wind that led to some exciting sailing. As the wind was strengthening, a yacht, two Snipes and the Laser decided not to sail in the second race. During the second race a very rare event took place when the Yole, Sumato, capsized after a sheet failed to release from a jamming cleat during a tack. All those on board were taken off by a safety boat and returned to shore while another safety boat remained on station until the capsized Yole could be taken under tow and brought slowly in to Ness slip where it could be righted and bailed out. This all attracted a big audience but it was great to see that Willie Tulloch maintained his sense of humour and good spirits throughout. After racing there was a meal at Stromness Golf Club and Stromness Shopping Week Queen, Caro Stockan, presented the prizes. Stromness SC Commodore, James Burgon, thanked all the competitors for taking part, the starting team of Dave, Sandy and Hugh and those who had kindly donated raffle prizes. Special thanks also went to the crews of the four safety boats, particularly to those involved in handling the capsized Yole situation. Angus Budge responded with a vote of thanks on behalf of the Visitors. In this event each skipper races in his own boat first and then races in each of the other boats in turn. Points are scored in each boat in each race and the final result is determined by cumulative points. The skippers were: James Burgon, Johnny Robertson, Mark Taylor and Malcolm Tipler and the boats used in the races were Bonxie, Go Quickly Red, Njord and Wild Goose. The results were as follows: 1 James Burgon (Bonxie 3, Go Quickly Red 1, Njord 1, Wild Goose 1 = 6pts), 2 Malcolm Tipler (Go Quickly Red 1, Njord 2, Wild Goose 2, Bonxie 3 = 8pts), 3 Mark Taylor (Wild Goose 2, Bonxie 3, Go Quickly Red 3, Njord 2 = 10pts), 4 Johnny Robertson (Njord 4, Wild Goose 4, Bonxie 4, Go Quickly Red 4 = 16pts). Congratulations to Commodore James Burgon. Calum MacIver and Fred Johnston manned the safety boat and Isobel Tipler was the starter. Commodore’s Cup Series The Commodore’s Cup Series continued on Thursday, 14 August with three races held in a light northerly wind over course 1. This course provides a long beat up the harbour and in light winds presents a challenge to spot the wind shifts and make allowance for tidal currents. The race results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Davy Harcus), 2 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 3 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 4 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans), 5 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Barry Jones). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Mercury Too, 3 Fiddlesticks, 4 Scooby. DNS Bonxie Race 3: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Fiddlesticks, 3 Mercury Too. Rtd Scooby. DNS Bonxie. These results mean that Fiddlesticks and Go Quickly Red are currently joint leaders in the series, followed by Mercury Too. Calum MacIver skippered the safety boat and Isobel Tipler was the starter. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club: 07.08.08 - Commodore's Cup The Commodore’s Cup Series began on Thursday, 7 August with three long races sailed over northerly wind course no. 1. This provided a very good beat up the harbour to mark 4 with plenty of opportunity for good and bad tacking decisions. Isobel Tipler was the starter and Calum MacIver and Davy Harcus manned the safety boat. Race 1 was relatively uneventful with an orderly start, no major incidents and Fiddlesticks coming through to win. As the Race 2 starting sequence began, Mercury Too came in to the slip-rope to effect some emergency repairs and so was late starting. By contrast, Wild Goose was early and had to be recalled. After re-starting she hit an obstruction and retired to check for damage. Go Quickly Red survived battles with Fiddlesticks and Hassfang and came through to win. Most of the fleet started Race 3 in an orderly fashion but an infringement by Wild Goose required a 720 degree turn and Mercury Too passed the wrong side of the outer mark and had to return to start. Fiddlesticks clocked up another convincing win. The race results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Harry Sidderfin), 2 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corse), 3 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Graeme Kennedy), 4 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 5 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 6 Humdinger (Barry Jones/Johnny Robertson), 7 Bonxie (James Burgon/Alastair Banks). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Fiddlesticks, 3 Hassfang, 4 Humdinger, 5 Bonxie, 6 Mercury Too, Rtd. Wild Goose. Race 3: 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Hassfang, 3 Go Quickly Red, 4 Wild Goose, 5 Bonxie, 6 Humdinger, 7 Mercury Too. Bonxie was sailing with rookie crew, Alastair Banks, who had been press-ganged by James Burgon at the last minute. He was still smiling at the end of the evening despite a few tangles with sheets and halyards during the races. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club 31.07.08 - End of Points Series The final three races of the 2008 May to July Points Series were held on 31 July, with seven Snipes taking part. The wind was from the SE, force 4-5, and course no. 4 was used. Isobel Tipler was the race starter and Fraser Corse skippered the safety boat. All three races were hard fought, with several places changes during the course of the races. The results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 2 Bonxie (James Burgon/Kenny Holland), 3 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 4 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 5 Nemo (Fred Johnston/James Stockan), 6 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Finley Hall), 7 Humdinger (Gordon Hill/Barry Jones). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Bonxie, 3 Hassfang, 4 Nemo, 5 Silver Fern, 6 Humdinger, 7 Scooby. Race 3: 1 Hassfang, 2 Bonxie, 3 Silver Fern, 4 Humdinger, 5 Go Quickly Red, 6 Scooby, Rtd. Nemo. The final points for the May to July Points Series are being calculated and the results will be announced at a later date. Many thanks to all who took part. The Commodore’s Cup Series begins on Thursday, 7 August. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club 17.07.08 The following are the results of the Snipe racing held at Stromness SC on Thursday, 17 July 2008. Race 1: 1 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Anna Taylor), 2 Nemo (Carrie Stockan/Katherine Stockan), 3 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 4 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairie Wards), 5 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Manson), 6 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 7 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corse), 8 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans), 9 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Dean Harcus), 10 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Finley Hall). Race 2 (Crew Race): 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Noringa 3, 3 Bonxie, 4 Njord, 5 Hassfang, 6 Scooby, 7 Nemo, 8 Mercury Too. Race 3: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Noringa 3, 3 Nemo, 4 Wild Goose, 5 Bonxie, 6 Mercury Too, 7 Fiddlesticks, 8 Hassfang, 9 Njord, 10 Scooby. Mark Shiner was the stand-in starter and Barry Jones skippered the Safety Boat. The Stromness Regatta, scheduled for Saturday, 19 July but had to be postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Weather permitting the Regatta will be held instead on Saturday, 23 August 2008. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Thursday, 10 July Dinghies More wind this time but bitterly cold and from the north. Course 1 was used and all three races were skipper races because of the wind strength. Calum Maciver and Davy Wishart were on safety boat duty and Isobel and Pete Tipler were the starters. To be fair, Course 1 is not often used but it was quite exciting for the starters to watch half the fleet about to approach the fixed start line from the west while the other half was approaching correctly from the east. Three of those from the west realised they were in the wrong place and managed to go round the outer mark to start, with inevitable mayhem, but the fourth had to face the entire starting fleet bearing down on him on starboard as he tried to keep out of their way and round the outer mark to start late. Race 1: 1 No Fear (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 2 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 3 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 4 Jual (Ian Johnstone/John Young), 5 Humdinger (Barry Jones/Alan Long), 6 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Robbie Stephenson), 7 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Finley Hall). RTD Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Graeme Kennedy), Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Manson). Race 2: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Jual, 3 Hasfang, 4 No Fear, 5 Wild Goose, 6 Humdinger, 7 Njord, 8 Scooby RTD Noringa 3. Race 3: 1 Wild Goose, 2 Hasfang, 3 Jual, 4 No Fear, 5 Go Quickly Red, 6 Humdinger, 7 Njord, 8 Scooby. RTD Noringa 3. Yachts: Two races were also run for three visiting yachts from Kirkwall – New Dawn, Shiant and Nereidies – in town for the regattas in the west. My apologies for confusing the names of the yachts. The elapsed times were as follows: Race 1: Nereidies (48min 52sec), New Dawn (49min 04sec), Shiant (52min 41sec) Race 2: Nereidies (46min 52sec), New Dawn (47min 59sec), Shiant (52min 05sec) Isobel Tipler Thursday, 3 July Only two races were held on 3 July because of light and falling wind. The first race was held over course 8 and the second over a modified course 5. New to the Stromness fleet was Hassfang which used to belong to Alan Donaldson and is now in the hands of the Dunnets and sailed by Chris Moore and Harvey Dunnet. The results of the races were: Race 1: 1 Nemo (Carrie Stockan/Katherine Stockan), 2 Vendetta (James Stockan/Paula Hemsley), 3 Hassfang (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet),4 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Graham Halcro), 5 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Finley Hall). Race 2: 1 Scooby, 2 Hassfang, 3 Nemo, 4 Vendetta, Rtd. Njord. Stromness Sailing Club Week 8 19.06.08 On Thursday, 19 June nine Snipes took part in racing over course 7 in a moderate but very cold westerly wind. The first and third races were skipper races and the second was a crew race. Calum MacIver was the safety boat skipper with a rookie crew in the first race and Gordon Deans in the second. Isobel Tipler the starter. Racing was very competitive with some good scraps around the marks of the course and several positional changes. Apart from that there were just a few minor incidents such as Fred Johnston’s hat blowing off into the water as he started the first race, Scooby capsizing by number 6 mark and Go Quickly Red doing a spectacular near-capsize and recovery on the leg from 6 to 1 in the last race. The full results were: Race 1: 1 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 2 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 3 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans), 4 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Thorfinn Johnston), 5 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corsie), 6 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 7 Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 8 Humdinger (Barry Jones/Eline Feenstra), RTD. Scooby (Donnie Hall/Graham Halcro) Race 2 (crew): 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Lady Midnight, 3 Mercury Too, 4 Silver Fern, 5 Humdinger. Race 3: 1 Go Quickly Red, 2 Silver Fern, 3 Mercury Too, 4 Wild Goose, 5 Fiddlesticks, 6 Lady Midnight, 7 Scooby, 8 Humdinger. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Week 7 12.06.08 Eight Snipes battled it out over course 8 in a fresh north westerly wind on 12 June. The conditions were a little too demanding for a crews’ race so all three races were skipper races and some of the Snipes even managed the occasional plane. Scooby had a fantastically timed start in the second race but the skipper was clearly surprised to be clear and away and expecting starter, Isobel Tipler, to recall him for being over the line (he wasn’t) and immediately dropped back to and let the rest of the fleet through. Later, at the start of the third race, Davy Wishart and Barry Jones in the safety boat had some work to do as Gordon Hill and Ross Manson in Noringa 3 went for a swim near mark 1. The full race results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans), 2 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 3 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Paula Hemsley), 4 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 5 Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 6 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Manson), 7 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Neil McGibbon), 8 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Finlay Hall) Race 2: 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Go Quickly Red, 3 Bonxie, 4 Lady Midnight, 5 Noringa 3, 6 Njord, 7 Silver Fern, 8 Scooby Race 3: 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Bonxie, 3 Go Quickly Red, 4 Lady Mignight, 5 Silver Fern, 6 Njord, 7 Scooby, Rtd. Noringa 3. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Week 6 05.06.08 Nine Snipes sailed in rising southerly winds over course 4 . Calum MacIver and Davy Wishart manned the safety boat and Barry Jones was the race starter. The results were: Race 1 Skipper: 1 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Phoebe Taylor) 2 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Rosie) 3 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards) 4 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corsie) 5 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Mansen) 6 Nemo (Carrie Stockan/Katherine Stockan) 7 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans) 8 Vendetta (James Stockan/Neil McGibbon) 9 Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet) Race 2 Crew: 1 Mercury Too 2 Fiddlesticks 3 Nemo 4 Go Quickly Red 5 Noringa 3 6 Vendetta 7 Lady Midnight Race 3 Skipper: 1 Wild Goose 2 Fiddlesticks 3 Go Quickly Red 4 Mercury Too 5 Noringa 3 6 Vendetta 7 Nemo 8 Lady Midnight Stromness Sailing Club Week 5 29.05.08 Six Snipes sailed over course 7 with a falling westerly wind. Willie Mackay was the safety boat skipper and Isobel Tipler was the race starter. The results were: Race 1 Skipper: 1 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill, Ross Mansen), 2 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Harvey Dunnet) 3 No Fear (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 4 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Stephanie Wauchope), 5 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Barry Jones), 6 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans) Race 2 Crew: 1 Noringa 3, 2 No Fear, 3 Bonxie, 4 Go Quickly Red, Rtd Mercury Too. Race 3 Skipper: Race abandoned due to lack of wind (and excess of midges). Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Week 4 22.05.08 Racing was cancelled on 22 May due to the strength of the wind and this report covers the two weeks 29 May and 6 June. Stromness Sailing Club Week 3 15.05.08 Ten Snipes were on the water for racing on Thursday, 15 May 2008. The wind was westerly and course 7 was sailed. Commodore James Burgon stood in for Isobel Tipler as starter and the safety boat was manned by Calum MacIver and Davy Wishart. The first and third races were for Skippers and the second race for Crews. The full results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 2 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Graeme Kennedy), 3 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Ross Mansen), 4 Humdinger (Barry Jones/Neil McGibbon), 5 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 6 Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 7 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corse), 8 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tiplre/Robb Mitchell), 9 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Paula Hemley), 10 Nemo (Carrie Stockan/Katherine Stockan). Race 2 (Crew): 1 Wild Goose (Graeme Kennedy), 2 Fiddlesticks (Mairi Wards), 3 Noringa 3 (Ross Mansen), 4 Silver Fern (Alan Long), 5 Humdinger (Neil McGibbon), 6 Lady Midnight (Harvey Dunnet), 7 Nemo (Katherine Stockan), 8 Mercury Too (Fraser Corse) Race 3: 1 Noringa 3, 2 Nemo (James Stockan), 3 Wild Goose, 4 Fiddlesticks, 5 Silver Fern, 6 Lady Midnight, 7 Go Quickly Red, 8 Scooby, 9 Mercury Too, 10 Humdinger. Training Last season some youngsters started to learn to sail at the Club. The first session of this season was held on Sunday, 18 May and it was good to see four of the colourful Toppers out on the water again. Even after the long winter break it was clear that the lessons of last year had been remembered. Well done lads. Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Week 2 08.05.08 Eight Snipes turned out to compete in three races on Thursday, 8 May and again enjoyed steady wind from the south-east and plenty of sunshine. No disqualifications this week but the competitiveness of the sailing was evident from the shouts of ‘Starboard’ on the approach to marks and gear failure as boat parts were put under stress. Not all were competitive; Njord’s skipper and helm were off sightseeing at the start of the last race but at least they had clear air while the rest of the fleet were getting in each other’s way at the first mark. Unfortunately, this also meant that Njord was behind the fleet at the end and at one stage it seemed they were going to make the evening even more exciting by capsizing neatly in the channel in the path of the fast approaching Hamnavoe while the safety boat was busy retrieving Noringa whose tiller had broken. Still all was well in the end and the race results were as follows: Race 1: 1 Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Graeme Kennedy), 2 Noringa 3 (Gordon Hill/Malcolm Tipler), 3 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 4 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 5 Mercury Too (Fred Johnston/Fraser Corsie), 6 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Barry Jones). 7 Njord (Johnny Robertson/Neil McGibbon), Rtd. Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet). Race 2: 1 Wild Goose, 2 Noringa 3, 3 Mercury Too, 4 Scooby, 5 Silver Fern, 6 Fiddlesticks, 7 Lady Midnight, 8 Njord. Race 3: 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Wild Goose, 3 Silver Fern, 4 Mercury Too, 5 Lady Midnight, 6 Scooby, 7 Njord, Rtd. Noringa 3 Isobel Tipler Stromness Sailing Club Week 1 01.05.08 It was great to see most of the Stromness SC stalwarts out on the water for the first three races of the 2008 season. Nine boats sailed, all with familiar skippers, some with new crew and some with newly tweaked rigging. The steady easterly breeze and sunshine made for some good sailing and an easy evening for the safety boat manned by Calum MacIver and Johnny Robertson. Noringa and Wild Goose were both a bit too keen and over the line at the start of the first race. On recall Noringa returned to restart but Wild Goose went on to win the race on the water but had to be disqualified by the starter, Isobel Tipler. The full race results were as follows: Race 1 – 1 Fiddlesticks (Neil Foubister/Mairi Wards), 2 Lady Midnight (Chris Moore/Harvey Dunnet), 3 Bonxie (James Burgon/Gordon Deans), 4 Silver Fern (Davy Harcus/Alan Long), 5 Scooby (Donnie Hall/Barry Jones), 6 Noringa (Gordon Hill/Ross Mansen), 7 Go Quickly Red (Malcolm Tipler/Robb Mitchell), 8 Mercury Too (Fred Johnstone/Willie Tulloch). Disq. Wild Goose (Mark Taylor/Graeme Kennedy) Race 2 – 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Wild Goose, 3 Silver Fern, 4 Go Quickly Red, 5 Mercury Too, 6 Lady Midnight, 7 Noringa, 8 Scooby, Rtd. Bonxie Race 3 – 1 Fiddlesticks, 2 Mercury Too, 3 Silver Fern, 4 Noringa, 5 Go Quickly Red, 6 Scooby, 7 Wild Goose, 8 Bonxie, 9 Lady Midnight. Isobel Tipler |
