Stromness Regatta 2012

Stromness Regatta took place on Saturday, 14 July 2012. Although the number of boats was down on the 2011 number, the nineteen who turned out enjoyed a good day's sailing. We can't claim it was a hot summer's day but at least it stayed dry and the wind was of a reasonable strength for racing.  We are grateful to John Hinckley for making the effort to bring his yacht round from Kirkwall and are sorry that no other yachts turned up so he was unable to race.  Thank you for making the effort, John.

Please use the links below to see a copy of the report submitted to the Orcadian and the full result for the two races:

Individual Regatta Race Results

A selection of images from the day of sailors and boats are shown in the gallery below. These photos have been kindly provided by Willie Watters.  More images will be made available via a link quite soon.

As always there a few interesting moments for the spectators. The first was when Freyr became detached from the mooring line while still sorting out the rudder and, with a good breeze blowing, drifted eastwards into the starting area shortly before the start of the first Yole race and had to be captured by the safety boat. The second was when intrepid sea-dog Hector, fully equipped with buoyancy aid, went swimming just as the second Yole race was about to start, causing Sumato to delay a little before crossing the start line. The third, but regrettably not able to be viewed clearly from the shore, was the capsize of Wild Goose when leading the Allcomers Dinghy race.

The Regatta cannot take place without the help of many folk from within and outside Stromness SC. There are too many to name individually but a few special thanks are due to the starters, those who supplied and crewed safety boats, those who loaned equipment, Stromness Golf Club where the presentation took place, and those who provided the soup and sandwiches for the event.
