Welcome to Orkney Singers.

For the last two years we've been working on a project called The Big Orkney Song Project, funded by the HLF Lottery Fund.  We're nearly at an end, but have one final weekend of music and song to celebrate, in September 2010.

Find out what we've been up to over the two year project throughout this site.

The Big Orkney Song Project is a two year project set up to collect, catalogue and record Orkney songs.  We are in the process of creating the Big Orkney Song Collection, which will be accessible to eveyrone through the Orkney Library and Archive.  Our hope is to reinvigorate a song tradition in Orkney and preserve our rich and diverse song heritage.  You can listen to some songs, sing along and even watch some videos here.

Our first year was spent putting together our SongShare events.  We held these all over Orkney's Mainland, North and South Isles.  There was a free concert and workshop of Orkney songs and the opportunity to share and donate any Orkney song material anyone had, plus as much tea or coffee and biscuits as you could eat or drink.  We also visited care homes and day centresand ran some singing techniques workshops.

The project comes to an end in September 2010, when we plan to have a final (free!) farewell concert!

If you would like to get involved or if you want to share, loan or donate anything, please get in touch!

This project has been made possible through a grant received from the lottery funded Heritage Lottery Fund
