Posted on 04 February 2010 LEADER Increases Match Funding for Projects Posted on 15 January 2010
Groups can now apply for 50% match funding for projects through the Orkney LEADER programme - 10% more than was previously made available. Orkney Islands Council Convener Stephen Hagan said: “This is great news for community groups and makes the task of securing match funding for projects significantly easier.” The 10% increase, due to changes announced recently by the Scottish Government, should be available until the end of the Scotland Rural Development Programme in 2013. The LEADER programme is aimed at small scale projects and is open to any constituted group including charities, development trusts and the public sector. 19 projects in Orkney were approved for LEADER funds in 2009 and are earmarked to receive a total of £345k from the programme. The projects will be worth just over £1m to the county. Four projects were approved in December in round four of the funding programme, including a new kitchen for the Burray Fossil and Heritage Centre, a new path at Firth Community Park, a training course for tour guides to provide tours specific to Stromness, and a pilot scheme for in-school counselling of teenage groups with difficulties affecting their social development. Orkney’s LEADER Programme Development Officer Alister Brown said: “We will be having drop-in information sessions throughout Orkney in March where groups can come and discuss their project ideas. There will an information event funded by the Scottish Government on May 28 with information on LEADER and other funding opportunities and presentations from successful projects in Orkney. We’re still in the process of planning these events and will make details available in the local press and on the LEADER website in due course".
