S/13412 Private William Tulloch of Papa Westray and Sanday

Today is the centenary of the death in Iraq of William Tulloch.  William was born in Papa Westray, but worked at Newark Farm in Sanday and brought up a family there, so he is remembered on the war memorials on both islands.  William Tulloch's death took the Orcadian death toll to five of a relatively unknown attack by 1st Seaforth Highlanders in the Action at Istabulat in Iraq on 21st April 1917.  All five of the Orcadians had been called up under the Military Service Act 1916, so were conscripts who joined a Regular Army unit which started the war with only volunteer soldiers.   A pdf biography of William Tulloch has been added to the website Papa Westray and Sanday sections, or can be downloaded direct using the link below.
