9th July this year is the centenary of the loss of the battleship HMS Vanguard by a series of internal magazine explosions in the late evening of 9th July 1917. The 843 sailors killed in that disaster were the heaviest loss of life in the several great naval disasters in Orkney waters during the two World Wars.
