S/2972 Sergeant David Henry Steven of Stromness

Today is the centenary of the death in the Battle of the Somme of David Steven of Stromness.  David survived two tours in the line during the Somme fighting, but was killed by German shell-fire on 29th October during his third.  David's older brother John Robert Steven survived Royal Navy service in the war, to marry Elizabeth Hogg in Dunfermline in June 1923.  Bizarrely, John is commemorated in the RND section of the War Memorial in the town centre of Blairgowrie, having worked as a gardener in a nearby estate before the war!  David Steven's story is available as a Word document in the Stromness section of the website, or can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
