Second Lieutenant Colin Mackenzie Selbie of Birsay

On Bastille Day 1916 the British Army made its second major attack of the Battle of the Somme.  Against the advice of the French, who provided only a little artillery support, the right wing of the BEF launched a surprise dawn assault on the German 2nd Position at the village of Longueval.  Among those killed on 14th July 1916 were two young Orcadian officers.  An extended Word biography of Colin Selbie, born in the Birsay Manse, has been added to the Birsay section of the website, while it can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
