S/6513 Private Robert Gunn of South Ronaldsay

Today is the centenary of the death in France of Robert Gunn of South Ronaldsay.  He volunteered and joined the Seaforth Highlanders during 1914, landing in France with the 8th Battalion on 9th July 1915.  Robert survived the desperate fighting in and around the village of Loos in September 1915, only to die on that battlefield during a bombing attack on 3rd May 1916.  His story was told in the 2001 published book For Freedom & Honour by George Esson, who has kindly agreed to its posting on this website.  Robert Gunn's story can be found as a Word document in the South Ronaldsay section, or downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
