The story of the destroyer HMS Cossack setting free British sailors taken prisoner by the German ship Graf Spee during World War 2 is fairly well known. The cruiser HMS Highflyer set free British sailors taken prisoner by the German armed merchant cruiser Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse exactly 100 years ago today during the Great War. Highflyer's crew included Longhope born sailor John Coutts, whose biography (with the story of the prisoner rescue) has been added to the Walls section of the website, or can be downloaded as a pdf using the link below.
